Help me out =D
« on: Thu, 17 February 2011, 14:26:22 »
I'm currently looking for a new mechanical keyboard.
At the moment I have my eyes on a couple products.

SteelSeries 7G
Deck

SteelSeries looks pretty promising.  If there is any feedback on which is better or if there is really not much difference.

I like the LCD lights of the Deck Keyboards.

I'm sure there is plenty of other keyboards out there.  If there is some that you would consider, I'm all open ears.

Oh yeah, I'm a gamer.  So this keyboard will be used for gaming plus everything else.  I would like something with ps2 connect.

Thank you for taken the time to read//respond to this topic.

I think that Cherry MX switches are a good switch to start with. Apart from those that you have already listed you can also consider Das Keyboard, Filcos, Rosewills, Razer Blackwidow, Ducky, Leopold....

In the end there won't be too many differences between those, so please tell us a little more factors that you would want.

I guess I'm just being over cautious of what I buy.

"In the end there won't be too many differences between those"

That is what I wanted to hear, ty.  I just wanted some insurance I guess, or something like that from someone with more keyboard experience. ^^

I just want a nice keyboard.  I really like the LCD with the Deck Boards.   It has everything I want really.  I can get it with ps2 connect as well.  I really want ps2 connect over usb.

There is one thing I'm confused about still.. Tactile and Linear.
On there website they explain the differences, but not good enough in my opinion.
I think i want Tactile?

I think there basically saying, Tactile is faster?  I will be able to type faster and hit more key strokes with Tactile?  Than that's the one I want.

A linear switch is a switch that gets progressively stiffer at a constant rate during key travel. A force graph of a linear switch will show a straight line between the start and end of travel. Linear switch designs are simple and reliable, and most switches designed for high reliability will be linear. They were very common in the 1970s and early 1980s for terminal and PC keyboards, but have been eclipsed by the popularity of tactile switches since the mid to late 1980s.

A tactile switch is a switch that has 'bump' during travel. More formally, the force graph of tactile switch will show one or more sudden increases or decreases in force during travel. Usually the tactile point (i.e. the point at which the sudden change in force occurs) will occur around the point of actuation - in some designs it will occur exactly at the actuation point, but in many cases there isn't a perfect co-incidence. In broad terms, tactility in switching mechanisms is implemented by either depressing on something that gives way or collapses (rubber domes, buckling springs, beam springs) or by adding in a leaf that obstructs the travel of a linear switch (Alps CM or Cherry MX). Most keyboards for desktop or laptop computers will have tactile switches.

Linear doesn't give you any indication of when the key is pressed. It's just you pressing down and increasing force.

Tactile you can feel a little bump (with browns) or feel a bump and hear a click (with blues) that tell you when you pressed it. When you first get the board, you won't be able to utilize the bump well, but it becomes muscle memory after a bit of use. I've been noticing after almost 2 weeks with my Compaq MX11800 (brown) that when I play games I can spam keys much faster...i know where the bump is, and i just go there, and release. It allows me much faster response in games like Heroes of Newerth. My mouse movement is fast enough to deny/last hit creeps, but my Arctosa was the slow point as it could take me too long to depress the key. Now that it's starting to become muscle memory, I can notice sometimes I instinctively lightly tap the key to actuation, release, and tap again very quickly. I've noticed it helps a lot with the abovementioned denying/last hitting and especially with orbwalking (if you've played dota you'll understand).

I'm not a pro or anything, and the change I'm talking about isn't huge, it just helps when I need quick instinctive response.

inb4 ripster pops his head in to say 'Filco. Brown. Tenkeyless.'
Keyboards: Filco Majestouch-2 87key Browns - Realforce 103UB 55g - Compaq MX11800 (ghetto clears + doubleshots)

You will probably end up getting all three switches. I started off saying "derp, I will only get 1 switch" but now I have Cherry Blacks and Cherry Blues and am currently waiting for the Leopolds to drop at EK and then I will get a tenkeyless brown.

On a serious note, I think blacks require to much force, if you plan on using it for everyday activities and gaming as well, I would go for Blues or Browns.

Cherry MX1A-C1NW, clear
That's soft tactile I believe.

Deck boards don't come in click tactile, which is blue I think.
I want click. /sigh

I'm starting to think I'm thinking to much into this now.

I would like blues though, because that's the ones that make the nice click sound + Tactile.

Good choice, had one too. Very solid keyboard, offers NKRO over PS/2, only downside is the glossy finish.
