Home Office Headset/phone recommendation?
« on: Sat, 14 May 2011, 18:36:45 »
I need a land-line phone with a headset for my home office.  I am thinking I might save some money by not going with all-in-one setups, since they will probably have more than I need.  Also, I don't want the riser attachment type.  Any suggestions?  I know a lot of people of this forum work from home.  Thanks GeekHack!

a lot of cordless phones have a 2.5m jack for a headset, fyi
This could lead to many combinations, such as buying the phone/answering system you like and seperately choosing a headset option, such as a plantronics.
plantronics
I always found this option nice, because my fiance would use the phone only and if I needed to be hands free, i just plug in the headset, Of course more expensive gives you better features, quality, and they have dedicated bluetooth wireless ones.

Currently I just use my cellphone and have a bluetooth earpiece.

A cordless phone with a minijack would definitely be an affordable option, and it allows you to do more than just answer the phone and you can answer without a lifter.  Otherwise, everything we have here is Plantronics gear.

We have some that are basically pager sized analog phones (complete with dial pad) and a minijack for headphones; since they're standalone phones, no lifter is needed.  The standard 2.4Ghz phones work just as well, but are huge in comparison.  Our more common headsets are Avaya specific, which is the only option for a headset that interfaces with the phone and allows answering the phone without a handset lifter; these cannot do anything but off-hook/on-hook (i.e. no hold, transfer, etc...)

Besides possibly Bluetooth, I don't believe there is a standard for a wireless headset interface, so anything similar will be brand or model specific AFAIK.  And Bluetooth will likely only transmit the convo, not interface with phone functions like answering; i.e. You would probably still need a handset lifter.

Good info, thank you.  I didn't realize until I started researching this that adding a headset to standard phone did not offer answer/hang-up function (with the exception of proprietary devices.  I have worked in a call center in the past, so I am very familiar with the headset-amp/riser configurations.  I wouldn't mind having a dedicated phone with integrated headset (the keypad with a headset type) but I haven't received good feedback from people that have used them.  It seems that for something that will be used every single day for extended phone conferences, I should stick with either a riser setup or a headset attachment.

We have two of the keypad types.  One was used extensively by our receptionist without any issues whatsoever.  It was insanely expensive back then.  It appears they may be cheaper now, but difficult to find (or at least I had trouble.)

I think this is it:

This looks good too:
