Kensington Pro Fit USB/PS2 Wired Full-Size Mouse
« on: Sat, 02 April 2011, 13:24:55 »
This product apparently has a full-size name to go with it. Anyway, I got one last night and I'm already ready to return it. Not that it's a bad fit, but the build quality is lacking in certain places. I like the size as it actually fits into my palm but each time I grab it I have to keep consciously palming it instead of going for the claw grip that nearly all mice require of me. I also use a 3 on top grip as doing 2 on top and letting the ring finger hang down with the pinkie twists my hand/wrist and gets uncomfortable pretty quick.

Check out ye ol' Logitech M-BJ58 compared to the Pro Fit (and ignore the forced persepective, Pro Fit is larger in every dimension):

Palmed Kensington with thumb rest wing vs. clawed Logitech:

I find it much more relaxing on my wrist to widen my grip and put my thumb on the outside of the wing. By using the wing my thumb is closer to the first knuckle of my index finger than when I'm doing the Logi claw and puts more tension on my muscles. See those side buttons? They are WAY too high and WAY too small. That middle bump is just a bump so it acts like a rocker switch but doesn't rock much. It takes a lot more movement and pressure to push than the side button of a MS IMO 1.1:

Scroll wheel - the worst part:

I could live with the side buttons like they are, it's only a $20 mouse. However the scroll wheel leaves a lot to be desired in quality. It will warp to the side if you scroll with any side pressure and will rub the side of the case getting very stiff to turn. Also notice the changing gap at the topside of the wheel. I'm pretty sure this is due to how the mouse is packaged. It is in a plastic bag, the manual is wrapped around it, and it's just stuck in a cardboard box. Minimal packaging is nice but the pressure of being wrapped in the manual seems to have warped the rubber wheel and I'm not willing to live with it long enough to see if it straightens out.

I could fix the wing issue by building it out with some foam or some moldable plastic compound. There is no easy fix for the side button or the wheel. My first step will be to swap it out for another one to see if the wheel was a one-off or if it's a part of the series. If it persists then I'm going to be back into the search for another affordable large mouse.

Oh, and hi, I'm Jon.
