I can guarantee you that this wasn't the last typewriter manufacturer. The guy probably just said they were the last Indian typewriter maker, which is probably not true either. It's not like the daily mail is a reliable source of information, after all.
2 minutes of googling turn up what appears to be an active typewriter maker in China: http://www.cnofficeproducts.com/typewriter.htm
I'm sure there are dozens if not hundreds of small firms still going at it.

I can foresee the existence of hand made or small batch typewriters being made now and into the future.  People still buy abaci for their novelty, so people will still want a typewriter in the corner of their office 50 years from now.

Yes, a friend told me about this news story, and a short search showed that while the Indian company indeed made the world's last manual typewriters, Swintec made electronic typewriters for use in prisons - and then another story mentioned Brother. So you can still get an impact printer with an attached keyboard...
