Jumping into the world of mechanical keyboards
« on: Fri, 27 May 2011, 08:35:58 »
Hey everyone, I'm Hydroid I'm a self confessed computer nerd. I'm currently in the newbie phase of all this keyboard "crazyness". I've been reading the forums for a couple of hours and decided to sign up. I'm really glad I found this site because I was beginning to think I was the only one in the world who had an unexplainable fascination with keyboards in general. For a long while I've been wanting to start a collection of keyboards, rubber dome and mechanical. Mainly the only rubber dome ones I'd get would be special ones that either look really nice or else are limited editions or something. But I'm also thinking of starting off with my first mechanical keyboard now for day to day use. I know that I won't be able to go back once I start with it though. Finding this site is good and bad for me. I'm excited that you all seem like minded, but I'm usually very all in with stuff that I do, and this is really an extension of my complete immersion in computers. I don't think this is going to end in a pretty way financially for myself once I start.

Anyway, now that's aside. I currently use a Qsenn DT-35 that I ordered from Korea in late Febuary. I really do like it, IMO the best rubber dome keyboard I have ever used. It has a nice punchy feel to the keys and they feel nice and solid (for a rubber dome). I went into the purchase knowing it wasn't anything special for gaming and that I wouldn't get super skills with it, but sometimes I like to do something crazy like order a keyboard from overseas. and Before that I had a Razer Lycosa that I bought a year and a half ago before I was educated in the ways of good keyboard buying. I still argue the keyboard is reasonable for FPS games, but I now know its not worth the money nor is it anywhere near good for typing. It also is a nightmare to keep clean and develops a really squishy and rattly feel after a while. I do also have a Microsoft 500 basic wired PS/2 keyboard that served me well for a couple of years, but I got bored and wanted to try out more.

I'm now thinking of making my first mechanical keyboard purchase. I am mid-high level user I'd say with WhatPulse recording approx 3.5 million keystrokes total since I bought the Qsenn in late Febuary. So in a few months I'm expecting to need a new keyboard and thought I might as well start shopping now and get it right. From my research I'm pretty sold on Cherry Browns or Blues. In theory I like the idea of clicky keys, however I'm not sure if those around me would agree. Chances are I'll end up getting multiple key types eventually, but I'm having trouble deciding for the first one if it should be Blues or Browns. Also, I was wondering if there is any way to get keyboards from Korea. I'm learning a bit of Korean as I would like to visit/move there oneday and I've grown to quite like the fact that my DT-35 has the English and Hangul characters on the keys as well as a dedicated key for alternating between them. So I was wondering if anyone could help shed some light for a newcomer to the world of keyboard enthusiasts on importing keyboards. I currently live in Sydney Australia.

As far as I know, finding good quality mechanical keyboards in Korea won't be a problem.

I must say I've come to quite like the Leopold FC500R (http://www.leopold.co.kr/?doc=cart/item.php&it_id=1301969977) because I really quite like that minimal edging around the keys like the Filco Majestouch 104 and Steelseries 6GV2 but from what I understand you can't actually get directly from them without a Korean credit card?

But is there a way to get them from Korea to Australia? I'd ideally like to be able to get hold of one before I go over there as it may still be a year or two before I can go. I ordered my Qsenn from Gmarket and that worked out quite well. But I can't find any Leopolds on there.

Oh, right, looking a bit more today I see. So the Leopold FC300R is the Korean layout and the FC400R is the Japanese layout and then the FC500R is the regular english layout with no added characters. So I guess I'll have to specifically request the FC300R if I order from their Japanese branch.

there are new leopold whites on Gmarket I believe
I was just checkin em out last week because I was interested in buying one (I'm Korean and I speak / read / write Korean fluently)
I think you are able to order them without a Korean Credit Card and you can make a gmarket account as a foreigner
Gmarket also has a option for international EMS Shipping but the shipping price is pretty high
I was kind of lazy to go through all the hassle and that's why I decided not to order from Gmarket ( I live in US atm...)
but I'll look into it again and tell you if I acquire more information

thanks. My current keyboard the Qsenn DT-35 has Hangul characters on it and I ordered it through Gmarket. I was able to get an account and pay via PayPal, but I didn't know they did have Leopolds. (I've only just started learning Korean so I only know a couple of words, I guess that factors into not being able to find the keyboards easily) I'll try have a look again

EDIT:

Oh, haha now I feel stupid. Found it pretty fast this time.

And from using the translate it seems to like you can choose the switch types, character stamping, key color, and special keys from those drop down menus?

Also, am I seeing this right, that the Red switches are the only ones in stock?
