Ok, so I ordered a filco majestouch 2 105 keyboard with a swedish layout, blue switches, and a tool for removing the caps. If I switch around two of the keys, it'll essentially be a danish layout, and the keys needing switching are the same row, so that'll work out well. I couldn't get the tenkeyless version till august, so that's off the table.

Anyway, since I'm too late for the group buy, I'm mulling over my options.

I saw someone in the group buys quote signature plastics as doing a one-off for a ten-key-less board for 150$ or 175$ or something like that, but that was a while ago.

What can I expect if I ask for a quote of doubleshots, like the group buys?

I have enough time on my hands to design unique keytops for all the keys, no problem there...I figure I'd be picking out something vintage looking, probably a monospaced sans-serif font, large lettering, no alt symbols except for dedicated symbol keys.

I just threw 130£ after a keyboard, a similar amount after keys wouldn't be a dealbreaker, but I'm curious as to just how far they're willing to go, if I ask for some of the keys in different colours, for example.

Hope your epic knowledge can help me out, maybe give some guestimates of what I'm looking at. It'd probably be two distinct colour schemes, one for most of the alphanumerics, the other for function keys, some specific function keys colour-coded, and some specific alphanumerics colur-coded.

So what do you think? am I looking at 500$+? less?

If you are willing to spend that much to get just a few sets, you should turn it into a group buy.  The price should go down by a lot if you get 20, 30 sets.

Are you in Europe?  If you organize it (order, collect money, etc) I would be happy to be the receiver and ship them out for north america group buyers.

Alright, guess there's nothing for it. I'll report back when I get the quote.

And well, once I get it configured, maybe we can talk group buy...but the base keys will be danish iso. Since the alphanumerics and numbers keys probably won't have symbols on them, I'm pretty sure it'll be down to 8 or so keys being dependent on layout, and I could probably do that if people wanted.

I stress that last part... But _if_ people want, and I'm not completely put off by the pricing, sure. We can probably arrange it.

Wait for Round 4 and get a full set in Swedish layout for around $50 to $60.

You will do this again for round 4?  Awesome!  I am so sad that I missed round 3 and couldn't get a standard set.

I very well may. But for now, I have asked signature plastics for a quote on an incredibly detailed description of the board. If nothing else, it'll give myself and people here an idea of what a completely custom set costs.

I really like the look of the round 3 set too, and if I can get a :danish: (swedish was a compromise because it's closest) set at that price, I'll probably jump on it. But hey, if this is only twice, or maybe even 3 times as expensive, and I feel bored, I may forge on ahead.

On another note, since round 3 hasn't arrived yet, I'm looking at half a year or so before round 4 arrives, yes?

Why are the prices so expensive from signature plastics?  I don't get why they quoted a set of keycaps for 750 dollars when you can buy PBT ones for about about 95% cheaper.

How many of those sets do you think were made at the same run? The set-up cost is maybe 700 of those $$.

and exactly, PrinsValium....My sense is that this quote I proposed to them would be pretty darn expensive. I've asked for quotes for 1, 2 and 10 runs of the setup, so from those three points we can derrive a graph of the economies of scale involved.

I basically quoted orange for the escape key, lavender for arrows and wasd, 3 seperate blue-green hues for alt, ctrl and sift, the alphanumerics and symbols in dark grey, and the remainder of the function keys in black (apart from f's 1-4 and 9-12, which are also grey).

White typeface. I also requested unique art for every button with legends, spherical (if possible) surfaces, and the shortest-height sculpted keys.

I figured I'd get rid of all the text and symbuls but the bare minimum, put together good icon design for everything from the home button to the caps lock.

I also figure this setup would be pretty expensive to produce. Once, or if they respond, I'll put the exact formulation of the quote-request and response up.

The order is for a single keyboard, 105 buttons. The board in question is a filco 105 button keyboard. The final order may encompass keys for additional boards if I manage to sell my friends on getting these boards made. Therefore, I'd like to know the price both for one set, 2, and 10.

I would prefer if the keys had spherical keytops. I would prefer to deliver to you key art for every single keytop.

The following is a description of the colour and placement of every key for this board.

Further down is a summary of the number of keys of each colours and whether they have legends.

Detailed description:
The pale blue, pale turquis, pale green and orange buttons should not have legends.

There should be 2 pale blue on 4th row, 2 pale turquis on 5th row, 2 pale green on 5th row. These buttons should all be between 1½ and 3 + 1/4 unit length(they are two shift keys, two control keys, two alt keys). The orange would be 1 unit (the escape key).

The lavender buttons would be 8 of 1 unit size, one from the 2nd row, 3 from the third, and would have legends. The arrow keys should also be lavender, also have legends.

The rest of the alphanumerics and symbol keys would be dark grey with legends. So would the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 buttons on the keypad area. So would F1, F2, F3, F4, F9, F10, F11, F12.

The backspace, tab, caps, enter, home, end, delete, page up, page down, insert, printscreen, scroll lock, pause, num lock, both enter buttons, F5, F6, F7 and F8, two windows keys and a right-click-function key, and on the numpad "+", "-", "*", "'", the division key, and num lock...all of those should be black keys with legends. The spacebar should be black, no legend.

Summary:
All told, 105 keys total.
2 blue, 2 green, 2 turquis, 1 orange, no legends.

98 keys with white legends:

8 Lavender keys with white legends.
62 grey keys with white legends.
27 black keys with white legends.
1 space bar key, no legend.

Thank you for contacting Signature Plastics! Unfortunately we do not have
all of the keycap shapes required for a full 105 keyboard in any of our
Spherical families. Generally keycaps sets run from $700 for a single set to
around $150 each for 10 sets. If custom artwork is also required, we charge
$25 per keycap legend (usually x104 legends as the spacebar does not have
wording).

So essentially, 1 set would be 700 or so, 10 sets would be 1500 or so. That translates to roughly 90$ pr. 105 set + an initial setup cost of 610$. Not too bad if you can trigger economies of scale.
My request was obviously a bit long and perhaps tiresome to read, but supposing she gave consideration to all the details, a completely custom set like the one I was talking about would ring in at 3200$, which is a bit much for a keyboard =P Fortunately, 2 such sets cost only 3300.

Sadly, on note of the spherical keys, that means only a limited part of the keycaps could be spherical, and that would make it look like a bit of a hewn together monster. Could still be nice to type on, tho.

ANYWAY, so, there it is. If you made 100 of those sets, you could get the price down to 130$ a set, but that's a scale of group buy is beyond what I can take responsibility for. In conclusion, you can get custom keys from signature, you can get a nice assortment of colours, and it'll run you 700-800. You want a different font than what they offer by themselves, and it's 3000. Or you can wait for a group buy, and get off with having to pay a minute amount by comparison.

And I would put a link there, but should I just put it under key exotica? Are people gonna run into it there?
Or should I like under the doubleshot example, where people will definitely run into it before asking for a quote...but where it's not strictly relevant, because all they'll end up concluding is "ok, if I want these, I'll need to find a group buy".

Eh, I'm an utter geekhack noob. Don't want to break any protocol I don't know about; but if I were to do it, I'd probably put a link in both sections called "how affordable are custom doubleshots".

But you guys told me to ask for a quote, so I did that =P I expected a gruffy old engineer to read it, and be like "huh, this reminds me of that other request I got back in '82"....and then put the email straight to /dev/null.
