My First Mechanical Keyboard has arrived!!!
« on: Mon, 30 May 2011, 14:12:57 »
I'm so exited, I just got my first mechanical keyboard delivered to me.
It's a Filco Majestouch 2 Limited Edition with Red MX Cherry Switches.

I'll proceed to upload some pictures of it and my gf enjoying it, after I resize them, since I have a sucky inet connection, uploading the full sized pics would take till x-mass...

So far, I'm amazed by how light the key feels when I type on them, and I love the sounds of bottoming out, but I really want to try to get better and stop doing that.

On a small note, I'll say that the red keycaps that it comes with, for WASD, are a different profile than the normal ones, I would say between one to two mm higher, thats why I put the black ones back and changed the arrows.

I must now go back to my office, I'm an hour late already xD

Edit:
Like I mentioned before, my damned ISP decided to take a break last night and I wasn't able to upload a thing.

So now, here it is :)

My future wife holding and giving the devilish smile, thinking what will she do to her new addiction competition in my life.

Yeah, she decided she's going to get rid of it bitting the **** out of it, grrrr

Still trying and trying, but the build quality is pretty good ^^

(and yeah the house is very old lol)

So now me trying to check if we can get a scratch on it, without any success...

Welcome to the club brother!  The reds give you a lot more control than other keys.  The longer you have the better you will get at not bottoming out.  Its like learning to drive a manual transmission, your shifting gets smoother with time.  The Linear R is my favorite keyboard so far.

uploading the pictures now, yeah, bolivian ISP's are such a failure that their total uptime for internet service is often confused with the downtime.

thanks chongyixiong and yeah, I'm loving my keyboard, and like you guys said earlier, I'm already aiming into my next one, after tasting the change from rubber domes, I really would love to have at least one of each switches, so I plan to save as much cash as I can until xmass to get one with blue or brown switches, probably a tenkeyless for portability, carrying this big boy around and my netbook is heavy!

Well I can't reply to that, since this is a major change for me, since I'm used to my Spanish 105 key layout keyboard before, so now I'm getting used to the 104 key US layout. But I think I'm doing fine. Also, since tonight I'll try switching layouts to either Colemak or Dvorak, I'm still thinking about it.

But the key press feels amazing, I love the sound to bottom out, but I want to train myself to avoid doing it.

About my APM on sc2, I did noticed that it's way easier for me to get higher APM with this keyboard than instead of my older rubber dome.

Let me explain what I meant there.
I don't have any particular great APM really, my avg is around 80, I go as slow as 40 sometimes and jump to near 200 others, but some games I focus on trying to play faster, then with my rubber dome I used to have an average of 100 or around, this involves many unnecessary clicking, and also faster tapping, then I did a test and played the same way, focusing on playing faster and easily got near 150 and doing less clicking and more tapping.

Thats my personal experience and opinion, it might not be the same for others.
Mainly the problem I face when I play sc2, is that since I'm not confident enough on my skills playing, I get nervous many times(yeah lack of practice) and my hands and feet get REALLY COLD, and all the warm blood rushes to my head. So once my hands get cold, they loose force, and this affects my performance on the rubber dome keyboard, but on the light red switches I can play without any effort. Perhaps someone else here experiences the same.

Now about my fiance, yeah, I love her very much and she is very supportive to me, and my keyboardmania lol. We are getting married on October or November probably :)

About cold hands, its not a coincident that pro korea players in tournaments are using those sacks with something hot in them before matches to warm up their hands :) Anyone here on geekhack use them when typing? Grats on a nice keyboard btw :)

Thanks man, and yeah, well my room is quite warm, there's no cold weather around here even tho~ it is winter... 20C or around atm here. I'm usually with a big jacket on, and a scarf lol, and still happens... I think what I need urgently is to get more practice to gain confidence... ^^

Going back a little more into the topic, after some more games I did noted, that my APM has raised some, it becomes a lot easier to do mass tapping and before, when I was massive tapping and boxing, trying to get my apm higher, I would go for around 300ish, but now I can easily get to 500, anyways, this apm is pointless since I'm not really doing something with it, but its just a note.

I do really need/want to get my avg APM to 100 at least. It's been so long since the last time I played frequently... dang, working so hard is not good, not much time left to game :(

Well, I come back after 5 days of using it.
I noticeably have learned not to smack down the keys while typing, I bottom out a lot less, and I can't love more the light feel on the keys. When I try typing on other keyboard, even my Asus netbook feels so much harder to press... It just feels so good... it makes me wonder if it's worth it to get another keyboard with different switches.

I like the sounds of the keycaps when I bottom out, I really do, and this is what brings to my mind, it would be so nice to have a keyboard with the clicky sound of blues. But I wonder if I'll stand the change from the light reds to harder blues...

My next keyboard will probably be the DAS Ultimate, without lettering. And to deal with the glossy end, I'll get some special vinyls stickers to put on top of it and avoid scratchs.

Love the reds.  If you don't like the bottoming out that happens once in awhile try the Elitekeyboards sound dampening pads. Definitely give a soft and quiet landing.
Current in order of preference:  RealForce 87U Silent White with variable weighted keys X 2, Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless with Linear Reds, Filco Number-pad, Poker with Linear Reds

Sold or returned:  Multiple Microsoft and Logitech keyboards, Das Keyboard Silent, Cherry 6140, RealForce 103UB, RealForce 86U, Filco Majestouch 2 full sized with Linear Reds
