Model M Travel Question - Mine Doesn't Match the Curves
« on: Sun, 26 June 2011, 19:18:43 »
My Model M triggers at 0.120" of travel. The cureve everyone tosses areound indicated it should trigger at something much shorter, like 0.090".

It's a later model one, 42H1292, in pristine condition. It has one broken rivet, but I tested on keys away from there.

Can anyone else measure the travel to actuationon their Model M or Unicomp for me? I'm really curious.

Thanks!

My Model M seems to actuate lower than my friend's KB with Cherry Blues.
Let me measure this....
It's a little imprecise, but it seems my Model M actuates at about 2.4-2.6 mm. Mine has a ton of broken rivets, however.

That sounds a little more reasonable than my 3.0 mm (0.120") travel. This thing bottoms out just 0.030" past the actuation point - It's impossible not to bottom out. I'm very confident in my measurements as I'm using a dial indicator (hence my base measurements are in thousandths on an inch).

It sure is pretty though and it sounds great, it just hurts like heck.

my 1397000's keys are irregular, but most of them actuate extremely close to the bottoming out point (notable exception being the space bar)

That's odd, my 1397000 actuates in basically the same place as all of my other Model Ms, and there's quite a bit of travel after it. The space bar feels the same as all the other keys, as well.

Of course, this is based on me pushing the keys as slowly as I can past the actuation point, and then feeling how much further I have to go. So no actual measurements.

But it definitely FEELS like more than a single mm of space.

With mine when you go slow it's really obvious - you hear the click and then there's so little travel afterward you think there may have been none at all.

Weird.
