Coming from my old 486 AT KB (which I believe from reading here is a “cup” rubber dome), to the Lycosa, to the Tarantula, then to a BlackWidow Ultimate (which I'm selling in the classifieds btw)- omg is there a difference.

The build quality I think is pretty solid- I think the haters probably want an M copy or a brick of steel :p
Kinda wanna say typing on this is like a lighter version of those "space invader" switches....may be reaching on that.
This is my second mech KB, and am loving this…
Just thought I’d harass and share

Yeah the backlit one is nice for not-wanting-to-get-up-to-turn-on-the-light-from-day-to-night-gameing... The only annoyance is that it doesn't remember the backlit setting like what others have stated. It's kinda retarded but I'm sure (hopefully) this can be fixed with a firmware update.
Kinda wonder what the Filco with reds feels like- I believe there even lighter than the browns....eventually I'll get one of those, heh. Is there a backlit red, anyway?

Hi, Bah congrats on your new Xarmor purchase. I actually bought a Xarmor U9BL with blue switches. I think the bad build quality for Xarmor is over hyped. I have never tried a BW, but I bet an Xarmor is a lot better. Even though both boards are designed by Ione. I would never trust a razor product, and can never see one being durable, and dependable over time. With that said, they are cheaper. People like the macros on them. So everyone has their own taste.

I thought the design of the Xarmor was good overall. I mean I liked the rubber on the board, and around the keys. It felt pretty good. The wrist rest however was not that good, just because in their first generation Xarmor listened to complaints about the wrist rest being too hard to get off the board. But, Xarmor changed their wrist rest so it just sits inside the groves where there used to be a rod. The wrist rest actually now lifts up the board entirely in the front so the feet don't stick (or at least the one I had did). That really is a major difference between the Filco I am using now.

So that was really the only major complaint I had with my Xarmor before I took it back last month. I really ended up taking it back for multiple reasons. The blue switches were too loud to use on a daily basis. At first it was like "oh cool, a click, and tactile feedback" and then when it was 2am and I was gaming I became annoying by the noise. Blue switches can take their toll.

It was a good idea to get a brown switch. I figure that you probably tried the BW, and wanted a little less noise. That happens a lot, and it happened with me.

The red switch is really nice. I think that it will become be very popular here in U.S at some point. All switches will have a following at some point (really they already do, but everyone hasn't been able to try all the switches yet). There is no keyboard currently available with red switches, and back lighting. But, I can tell you based on my short experience with this red switch board that they will be coming out at some point (my wife loves my board, and preferred the red switch over the blue as well). I am sure there are a lot of people out there that would prefer the cherry red. It is similar to the brown switch (which is arguably the favorite switch of all) and that's a big reason why it will get its own following eventually.

Have fun with your new board Bah! The blue back lighting really is nice in the dark.

No their isn't a back-lit red yet.  I like my Xarmor U9BL-S but the Filco Red edges the U9BL-S for me for build quality and the linear feel.  The lightness of Cherry MX reds is kind of an illusion when compared to Cherry MX browns because of that absent tactile bump.  But really though, as far as lightness is concerned, they are both the same.  If you're wondering about reds right now, it looks like it's gonna keep bugging you until you get one because that's what happened to me.    Don't expect a big difference if you decide to get a red in the future.  It won't be much.

I just recently brought my BlackWidow Ultimate back out and boxed up the U9BL-S.  I'm using the BWU because I like using the macros for cut, copy, paste, and undo.  It's a big help in video editing and DAW progs like Pro Tools and Ableton Live.  It also helps that it's back-lit and I usually do most of my stuff at night since it's all a hobby for me.  I have my Filco Red sitting on the side.  As soon as a back-lit, macro, cherry red makes it way out I'm getting it.  The cherry reds feel like butter.  They're awesome to type and especially game on but I like the perks of the BWU so I'm back on it.

I think the build quility is fine if you just plug it in and dont mess with it. They really need to work on the clips
that connect the stabilizer bars to the board tho. I noticed if I give the space bar a good whack one side pops out.
The clips that attach the keycaps to the satbilazer bars are not snug at all on a couple keys also. You try to put
it back in and it just falls out.

Not a big deal if you dont switch out caps. Not sure if other brands are this fragile.

For the record I'm not a hater, but companies need to hear these things and hopefully they will learn from them and improve.
With a few refnements and some attention to quality I think they will have a decent product. Good gateway board to this addiction.

Likely I dismantled completely my Xarmor, four times, and i played with keycaps endlessly.

The only things more fragile than in a basic Filco are the keycap's stems, and not because a supposed inferior quality, but because the different kind of plastic, mandatory to have the transparent.

I Have no problem at all with larger keys or spacebars on both Brown xarmor or blue Q-pad, altough I must say yhat the blue version feels somewhat more "blackwidowish" and I'm not speaking about the obvious switches behavior, I mean the wobbliness of the large keys. It's not so intuitive, but is evident that the switch itself has a large part on the stability of the large keys.

Back to the wrist rest the one from Xarmor bought 3 months ago and Qpad (released the last week and delivered yesterday) are exactly identical (other than logos), they are easy enough to remove and they don't affects the keyboards stability at all

@ Truee

Hey Trueepower. Yeah the wrist rest is kinda reaching- those little plastic pieces you pop in are a bit flimsy and I can see them snapping after a few times taking it off \ on. Actually the noise really isn’t an issue for me- it was more so the force to have the key register that was my issue. I play FPS games and I need something where I don’t have to press down hard to make a key register….blues were just too hard to press.
Yeah I agree with the lack of awareness- I didn’t even know about most of these types of switches until I stumbled onto this forum \ the names of a few of these KB manufactures.

@whocares

Heh, yeah, I am wondering about how much \ little difference there is between the browns and the reds…
I actually tried the BWU- I’m actually selling it here in the classifieds btw (a cheap plug, yes I know) for a little bit but like I mentioned to Truee, I just couldn’t get used to the force to press the key and ended up sticking it in the closet…The extra features like the macros, etc- eh, to me it didn’t really matter though for some it is a deal breaker- to each his or her own :D

@Solutor

Nah, I meant Red Switches that were backlit, not red backlighting :P
Dude, that’s sweet with the green lighting…was it hard \ anything special to do that (yes probably a nub Q)?

Ok, sorry. I missed the point, anyway a red retroillumination is surely better than a blue one (although less trendy), it's not a case that red is used by astronomers, in submarines and so on.

Modding the board to reds is a relatively easy and cheap task. But is time consuming because the leds and the four point of soldering per switch.

I spent about 7 hours to mod my brown board to ergo clears, but in that case I had to disassemble and reassemble 200+ switches, red switches are currently available so unless you want to mod some black switches to go ghetto red, 3h of work should be sufficient  for the whole process.

Lol.  Ughh, yeah I would consider modding to green LEDs but I'm lazy \ kinda don't wanna run the risk of killing the KB...  :(
GD, I wish these KB manufacturers would offer different colors rather than just blue!

After a long brainstorm I went for warm white leds, so I can change my mind w/o any desoldering, I can do color schemes and I can have keys with dual color legends.

Leds are cheap nowadays, I payed 100 warm white LEDs 6.90 euro shipped.
