Looking for a deal on a starter board

I have been doing lots of reading here on geekhack and I have decided I would like to give a mechanical keyboard a try. I have never typed on a mechanical keyboard before so I am not set on any type of switch but the MX blues/browns sound promising.

I would like the keep the price around $50-$75 (I know that is kinda low for a mechanical board). Is anybody selling an used board in that price range?

For that range your best bet is a Model M.

I was thinking about the model M also.

Is a mini keyboard hard to get used to? How is it for gaming?

I play shooters and 3rd person action games mostly. Some DC Universe also :)

Also I am not sure home much, if any difference it makes but I run linux.

I looked at the Storm but I am not into it. The price is right but I think I will keep looking for a while.

The only thing I witnessed in Linux was that numlock/capslock leds didn't light because the silly way they split the board into multiple USB endpoints to get NKRO.  Since the switches weren't on the same controller as the LEDs they didn't get lit in Linux.  Annoying but still usable.  OSX hates this board however.  I only fiddled with the board for a little while before re-selling it since I didn't like the layout so maybe there are more issues than what I found.

I've been using Model M's for almost 2 decades, but gaming on them is a bit of a chore.  Will your primary use be gaming or typing?  If it's the latter, you might consider a Model M off of eBay or a Unicomp and keep your old keyboard for gaming.  Unicomp has their "Kentucky Wildcats" buckling spring keyboard for $60 in their "Bargain Rack."  You can't beat that price for a brand-new BS keyboard, as long as you don't mind the look.  :)

My main use will be gaming. After doing some more looking around I think I want to give a small keyboard a try, like the KBC Poker. Still looking for a good deal though. :) wish me luck.

Poker's are tough to come by right now. Supposedly we're going to get a Group Buy here for the Vortex Pure at some point in the future. Keep your eyes peeled for that if you don't find a decently priced Poker in the meantime.

Hey, I *like* the look. (I'm a proud owner of that keyboard). The keyboard feels awesome, and I just use Ctrl-Esc rather than the Windows key.

I've got some G80-11900LUMEU for $25 each plus shipping. They are great starter boards since they are cheap and pcb mounted so you can swap out some stems to try out different switches.

May also try a CM Storm with MX-Reds and O-Rings. Could be a revelation really.

That is a good board for the price, it is the my girlfriend daily driver and the best cherry brown board I have ever owned is the compaq 11800 (similar model just oem).
