IBM Model M: How to clean the room between the keys the best way???
« on: Thu, 08 September 2011, 13:19:06 »
Hi,

Before I do something wrong I think its better to ask the experts ;)

I want to clean an IBM Model M. I opened the case and removed carefully
all keycaps. Some keys (the bigger once). Do not have a seconde keycap.
Removing those opened the "tunnel/chimney with the spring" at once.

Those keys and keycaps I put into a bath of warm water and two kukidents
(denture cleaning tabs).

So far so clean... ;)

Next is the space between all those "spring loaded chimneys"...what about that?

Currently I feel unsure to brush the dust away, since this will then move partly into the air
I may find its way into the mechanism...!?!?!?!?!

Water? No good, too?!?

What is the best way to get rid of all that dust?

Thank you very much in advance for any help ! :)

Best regards,
mcc

Typos are due to my chance from a QWERTZ (german) layout
to an US-Ansi International layout. Sorrz, I am just practising ;)

How far down are you willing to go? If you're going for a bolt mod, just tear it all the way down, and just wash it in the sink. If not, then a tooth brush is probably your best bet. Not sure how useful the simple green is in this case, especially since it sounds like you're in Europe, but I've used just soap and water in small amounts, and then wiped it down with a clean cloth after with no negative impact.

I have been using q-tips and hot water.  I went through 10 or so q-tips for a very dirty Model M.  Next time I will try ripster's suggestion with a used tooth brush andtheferenc's suggestion of soapy water.

ahh cool, i guess that means the boards got there safely.
Please leave me feedback in the classifieds section.

Besides toothbrushes, you can also use pipe cleaners (soft ones) or Herco Saxophone cleaning brushes (perfect size in my opinion)

Use the new iTrader feedback system instead.  Just view the member's profile, and it is the first tab.
