My first impressions with mechanical keyboards
« on: Thu, 08 September 2011, 15:51:41 »
Hello guys,

yesterday I received my first mechanical keyboards, which I've bought from Ascaii. It's a Cherry G84-4100, and a Cherry G80-1800 with MX Blacks. I planned on using to G84-4100 as my carry-around keyboard, until I can afford a Poker, and the G80-1800 as, well, I don't really know what I wanted it for, except for having a keyboard with blacks...

Anyway, lets get to the (still little) experience I've made in using these two.

The G84-4100 with it's ML switches is pretty interesting to me. It feels much better than my ordinary notebook keyboard (I can't believe, they didn't use scissor switches), but still I hoped to get a more tactile feedback of them. Now I know what all these "ML sticking issue" reports are about. If one hits a key a little off the middle it's much harder to press it down. Anyway it's something I can get used to (typing exactly, not the sticking). I think it's a fantastic little board to take with you everywhere.

And regarding the G80-1800: Well, I'm still looking for a good usage of this one. I think the Blacks are, well, interesting. I knew beforehand, that I would prefer a tactile switch, which is why I ordered a Unicomp keyboard recently, but I like playing some games when I find the time to do so, and was skeptic about Buckling Spring gaming. Now the Blacks really aren't what I would use to type a lot of text (anyway I'm typing this report on it, just to try it) because I just love to know, when the button actuated. At first I thought they would be a little to soft for me, but now, that I got used to it a little, it's very easy to avoid the bottom-out, and they really appear to be pretty stiff. I haven't tried gaming on it yet, but I will, and I will post about it too.

As far as I am now, I can say that it is an fascinating experience to type on a mechanical keyboard. It couldn't be compared to typing on a cheap rubberdome, and it would be hard to compare with a high-quality rubberdome.
Well. I'm happy with it until now, and I'm looking forward to collecting new experiences with other keyboards and switch types.

RC

P.S. I guess I finally have to change my signature...

Gratz! I use my noppoo choc mini with MX Blacks when I am at school. For home use I have a SIIG minitouch. Keep going, buy more!
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.
