Hey all,

Again, have to make another thread asking for your input..

Do you guys think the following barebone kit and graphics card will play SC2? and on what setting? Building a spare comp for the gf but I'm not good at matching parts... Thanks for any help!

Barebones kit:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1101418&Sku=B69-0419

AMD X2 Phenom 3.10ghz dual core
4GB DDR3 RAM

Graphics card:

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=62414&vpn=N520GT-MD1GD3%2FLP&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar

Recommended settings for SC2:

PC Recommended Specifications:

    Windows Vista®/Windows® 7
    Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
    2 GB RAM
    512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

EDIT - And will this build handle Win7 smoothly?

I have a gt 430, a similar card, and in order to get the FPS that I like playing at (~60-70) I have to play on low

High graphic settings are great for casual players but most pros play on low because it does give small advantages, it is easier to micro and see what is going on with less shiny units. Example seeing cloak units and sniping an observer when you have vision.

It also depends on what screen/resolution you will be playing the game on. As previously stated, you will need to run it on low to get half decent fps for playing from it anyway, but if you are running 1920x1080 you will probably want something with a bit more beef in it such as a GTS 450 or even a GTX 460. I have 2 GTX 460s in SLI in my system and I still run the game on lowest @ 1920x1080 just to keep it as smooth as possible. The framerate is very volatile in SC2. Normally I run at around 180fps but it can still drop as low as 40 on my system in maxed out battles. The other thing is that SC2 benefits greatly from more powerful CPUs so that PC should be able to play the game on lowest if you are just going to casually play, but if you are wanting to get really good at the game or play in competitions and such I'd recommend you look into atleast a quad core and more powerful graphics.

I won't strech myself in completely alternative configurations because I don't play SC2. I'll just give you a warning, that combo has a very nice and multiplier unlocked 80W 550BE X2 CPU, designed for overclock and that might even unlock to 3 ou 4 cores if bios permits. But don't even try to mess with, that board only accepts 95W CPUs, which is a very bad sign.
The next slightly more expensive combo at $263 with a gigabyte board here seems a better deal. That GA-M68MT-S2 supports 125W Cpus and core unlocking, so you might try your luck to turn it into a X3 (if possible on that bios when a disabled core is damaged) or four core given some luck (while putting you at the MBs TDP limit), or simply boost it a bit for a couple multipliers which shouldn't even require a vcore adjustment (unlocking and OC at the same time is a big NO given the rest) as you have a small 45W margin to play. A 1090T X6 is even in the supported CPU list, not that I'd trust it to abuse. Btw, you might have to change that CPU cooler before any adventure, I'd even be afraid to run it stock as a little search shows it rated for only 65W, but current manufacturer specs also list phenom X4 II so I don't know what to think about something that looks even worse than the stock amd cooler.
That combo also brings a 1TB drive instead of 500GB and slight more powerful 450W PSU (from 400W, albeit equally dodgy), as these configurations have onboard GPUs and weren't intended to add a dedicated card. So don't slap something hungry on the GPU side, that 520GT shouldn't pose a problem as they seem to draw ~30W maximum in some reviews. A GT430 is about 70% faster due to double the amount of shaders and texture units, you can find them equally for about $40 in NCIX after rebate, but power consumption will top at ~50W.
Btw, SC2 doesn't seem to scale much over 3 cores.

Thanks for all the input guys (esp Alley Viper, thanks for the post)

I actually ended up building the rig the day after I posted (my gf was leaving town so had to get it together ASAP).

In case anyone was wondering I ended up with:

Gigabyte 970A-D3
Mushkin Silverline 4gb ddr3 1333
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black edition
XFX GT240 512MB
400W PSU

And on 1920x1080 on max settings she gets a surprising 55fps.

Nice man! Although I'd still play on lowest graphics. I'm a bit of a framerate junkie, but I'm sure if you had to put the rig in a 4v4 or even just a 200/200 battle it would soon drop a lot of those frames.

It ended up quite a better and upgradeable built, after 2 years the first am3 flagship is still a very capable CPU. With a HD6850 it'll do wonders for the lowest cost.
Sorry I completely forgot about the GT240. Previous DX engine cards in the lower price range are almost always faster.

Yeah for sure, even my $1600 rig drops to <60fps in big 4v4 battles.. and in desert strike 1 FPS at the final battle FTW!!!!111!!!

It's weird cause she's now running into some artifacting issues after a few games of SC2.. she gets a low pool page memory warning and artifacts (~~almost like TV static) appear all over the screen. Will have to wait till she brings the comp back before I can see what's up :S

The first time my nvidia card started getting artifacts, it died not too much later. You should try applying some new thermalpaste and reseating the heatsink, clean out some of the dust while you're there.

In regard to running sc2, from some testing that I've done, large 200/200 battles are CPU limited more than GPU assuming you don't run extreme graphics settings. My i5 2400 can do sc2 with onboard graphics at low fairly well. I think a 6770 would be fine at medium or lower graphics. I like some of the extra detail at high graphics but not all of it, so I turn off reflections and shadows - nice fps boost just from that.

Weird stuff, screen garbling is almost always related to graphics card. Lower end cards sometimes are poorly assembled and you should check that as suntorytime pointed, but for starters use similar white silicone paste just in case you still have to RMA it. If it's not gpu overheating, you might try something older like 258.96 or 197.45 drivers which can differ a lot vs a more current release, and still support your card.

If it still fails, and your gpu can be ruled out, I can give you some guidance to pinpoint cpu, cpu_nb, or memory problems. These don't seem to be the culprit, but beware that even stock your K10.5 will start to throw errors at ~55ºC (socket, and closer to 60ºC via diode).

I sincerely hope that you bought a better quality power supply than the Diablotek included with the Barebones kit in the OP.
