So I just installed Ubuntu...

Having only briefly used Ubuntu long ago, back around I think version 6, I didn't care for it much. However, I saw a bit of 11.04, and the interface seemed so cool I had to at least try it. So I partitioned an 80 GB HDD, and here I am. I have ~35GBs given to Linux, and ~40GB for Windows 7, as I'm a gamer, and Steam is my friend, but I figured it was only fair that I give this newfangled stuff a shot. It's a bit weird coming into it though. I'm having issues installing my graphics drivers, and my mouse is a bit more  sensitive than I'm used to. For any long time Ubuntu users out there, or Linux users in general, what would you recommend I do to adjust to it? And is there some way to use Steam chat on it without using WINE?

mouse sensitivity can be adjusted with a fader like in windoze under system controls. just go to programs and search for mouse.
maybe http://www.linux-gamers.net/ can help you with steam. With wine there is a good chance it will work.
Ubuntu has a big community which will help in case.

What graphics drivers do you need. running ubuntu is the reason i run only nvidia. nvidia gives quite a support for linux.
In 11.04 the driver installation for any nvidea is automatically done. You will get a popup and just follow the instructions.

However. If you have windoze, its less work to play on windoze. Working with Ubuntu here only.

Steam works fine in ubuntu using wine. Google it.

I sorted out the graphics drivers. That was actually not a huge deal. I know about WINE, but I just don't feel like setting it up. If I wanted to virtualize an OS, I would have just done the whole linux install in windows thing. I'm looking for something more along the lines of just a straight up chat app sort of thing, since people I talk to only really use steam nowadays. From what I can find though, those don't really exist. Apparently Valve's a bunch of sticklers when their chat API is concerned.

empathy is the intant messanger that comes with 11.04 and its capable of most protocols. For steam you will need WINE in linux, because its only macOS and windoze.

Right now I'm enjoying the Unity launcher that was bundled with it, so I'm gonna stick to that. Is there any way to get apps to install to a directory that isn't /home? I want to put them on my terabyte drive with all my other stuff.

Some steam games work on ubuntu, but the majority of them you will get a nasty fps drop or fail.  If you want a fancy tool bar there is Avant window navigator.
