Do we have Logitech G500 users? (Edit: G400?)
« on: Wed, 07 September 2011, 15:59:41 »
I'm kinda intrigued by the mouse after learning it has the same sensor the Xai does but with a bit better parameters and lower price. How does it fare in RTS/fingertip grip and how comfortable is it to use in general or compared to Xai if you've been able to try both?

Edit: I'd also like to ask about G400.

If you've ever used an MX500, MX510, MX518, or G5, then the G500 will feel right at home for you. I've never tried the xai, but I've used plenty of symmetrical ambidextrous mice.

Honestly, since the MX500 that shape of mouse has been one of the most comfortable I've ever put my hands on, for both finger tip and palm grips.

i have been from a mx500 to a 518 to a g5 to a g500 and the g500 (fingertip and pit of palm style) is really solid, thought i have been looking into a xai/sensei style mouse. they are a bit smaller and i feel like it would be more comfortable to more of a palm style if i every switched styles.

I use a G500. I use a sort of fingertip/ half palm grip. It's a wonderful mouse, and has never caused me any sort of discomfort. I don't play many RTSs, as I am very, very bad at them, but I do play FPSs, and judging from the precision I can achieve in those, I'd say you will probably be fine in an RTS. I highly recommend it.

I've got a G500. I've had it for a couple of weeks now, and it's great. Nice textured grip and the sensitivity buttons are useful.

The G500 is an excellent mouse, but unfortunately it has one fatal flaw that is a deal-breaker for me...mine emits a very high frequency whine that drives me nuts!  Apparently it is caused by a particular kind of capacitor that many Logitech mice use on the PCB.  Here is a page with some technical details about the problem:

http://jdc.parodius.com/logitech/

Evidently the pitch of the noise is around 15Khz, so it is high enough that many people can't hear it, but if you CAN hear it, it's extremely annoying.

I can hear the noise from the clips that are linked on the provided page, but not with my mouse. Also, unless I missed it, the G500 isn't actually on that chart.

Hyper scroll is awesome. It's absolutely fantastic. I didn't think I would ever use it when I bought the mouse, but now I know that that was a foolish thing to reckon.

I have 2 g500s sitting in the closet, because my brother and I traded it out for the G9x. We both use claw grip so it was a fantastic switch.

No, you're right, the G500 isn't on that chart, but I think that page is also a bit out of date.  There are plenty of complaints about it from other G500 owners on the Logitech forums.  I don't always hear the noise on my mouse either; it depends on how quiet the room is, whether my hand is covering the mouse, etc.  It also seems to happen mainly when the mouse is idle on the desk.  If the mouse is in motion or if I pick it up off the desk, the sound seems to stop.

That said, I will admit that Logitech customer service has always been excellent in my experience.  I had a G9 that died within a week of purchase and they RMA'd it and sent me a new one, no questions asked within a few days.  I didn't even have to wait until they received my defective unit.  It looks like Logitech will also accept claims on this noise issue according to their forums, so if you do have this problem and it bothers you, at least you're in better shape than with a pinging Filco...

It's on sale today for $40 at newegg. You should probably call them to get a price adjustment.

I still have my g500, but ever since I picked up a g400, I haven't used it at all. The tracking on the g400 feels more accurate to me.

Oh, I've only just updated the thread title and opening post. Can I get more opinions on G400 please? Especially G400 vs G500, perhaps either G400 or G500 (which are very different mice, I know) vs Steelseries Ikari or Xai/Sensei?

For those that have used either the MX500/510/518 and the G400, how does the G400 compare to it's predecessor(s)?  Any major differences, downsides, etc.?

(Not trying to hijack your thread or anything, NewbieOneKenobi. I was just wondering about this and it seemed relevant and not worth starting a new thread over.)

I went from an MX518 to currently using a G5.   I hardly ever use the side buttons though as I tend to hold my thumb farther back so only the "back" side button is within comfortable reach for me.   I like the looks of the newer short fatty mice like the G9 series or the Saitek Cyborg rat

i owned g500, xai and ikari. no g400, but mx518.

ikari is a comfortable mouse. but not a good one for long time use and gaming.

xai is my preferred fps gaming mouse. it is brilliant.

i heard g400 is the upgrade from mx518. i prefer mx518's shape over g500. but g500 has adjusted weight which is a better.

i am not a professional gamer, so most mouses on the market have no tracking or any other technical trouble on a decent mouse pad for me.

The cable's a little thinner, the max dpi is 3600 (2x the 518), and the finish is now matte instead of glossy. Otherwise, it's identical. Plus it's cheaper than the MX518 AND the G300.. (at least on newegg - $38 w/ free shipping). Best mouse Logitech has ever made IMO.

I'm going to second that. The only thing I use my G500 for now is for audio editing, where the extra buttons (tilt wheel + 3rd side button) come in handy for remaps. But for gaming/computing, the G400 blows it away in smoothness/accuracy.
