Cheapest mouse with a flywheel?
« on: Sun, 31 July 2011, 12:49:45 »
Hi, guys, I really like the idea of flicking the scroll wheel and letting it go; what's the cheapest mouse (wired/unwired, I don't care) that can do that?
I'm back.

In the current production the wired M500 (39$) and the wireless M705 (usually 49$, now in special offer at 39$).

In the previous generation the MX620 (available also for left handed users)

I higly suggest the M705 that I consider one of the best mice ever

Hey, man, thanks so much!  I'm ordering a M705 as I write this.

Depending what youre looking at, I really like the g700 for gaming. As long as you're right handed, its quite comfortable.

Is the M705 still the best one to get? I like the feel of the flywheel in the store displays, but don't know if the scrolling speed would just be ridiculous on an actual computer, where you might as well type Page Down/Up.

Right now I have the MS 5000 and wanted something a little more contoured, so I was thinking of even springing for the MX Performance Mouse. I like the scroll sensitivity on the 5000 and the 3500, but I wanted something a little looser. I hate the ratcheting of most scroll wheels, so I don't know if you all have any recommendations for something other than the logitech series.

A refurb MX620 is the cheapest I know of, they're in the $20 range on eBay.

The VX Nano is also available on eBay for around $35.

I don't know of anyone but Logitech making these kind of scroll wheels.

You can use the whole os w/o a mouse if you want, but that's not the point. Tou use page up/down you have to move your handsa from the mouse, which is ofter way less handy than the scroll whel.

BTW I use the wheel tilting function as Pg up/down, is a good workaround on the stone age style mice, and a nice integration on the logitech ones..

Sorry, I meant Home/End- I didn't know if the flick of the flywheel would send you spinning all the way down to the bottom of a long page.

I use the M500. It's quite nice. Wireless mice always seem to be crapping themselves and not connecting or jumping around when I see other people use them.

The only issue I have with the M500 is that the flywheel seems slightly unbalanced. If you leave it `unlocked' (i.e. in flywheel state always), sometimes it will settle to a different point and your page jumps up or down by a bit, which is offputting.

What I need is a working scale-model tyre balancing machine ;)

I pulled it apart but couldn't see any moulding marks that might be causing it. Wasn't particularly impressed by the quality of the hub, the plastic seemed very thin. Somebody should make a mouse with a lovely tiny milled aluminium flywheel :)
