Hi folks,

I am wondering what peoples opinions are when it comes to home keys...

Everywhere that I have seen teaches asdf jkl; is where you should rest you fingers. But recently I came across a guy suggesting that  vdwq  bjip is more wpm and ergonomic.

I only recently made the decision to learn touch typing a couple of months ago. (I'm at 60-70 wpm after 2 months practice, thank you for asking!)
But I don't want to go from my previous bad typing habits, to new ones....  So, your opinions please!

Be back in a few hours, look forward to your thoughts.

VDWQ BJIP seems far too uncomfortable of a spread to be 'ergonomic' (I wish that buzzword would die already), it spreads the elbows too far out.

how the, f are you supposed to position this? i guess it works if you're keyboard isn't split but then the key positions are all wrong, this for non qwerty?

It might be more ergonomic to him. Maybe he types with the keyboard up against his chest, or has super broad shoulders. Regardless, it's something that you can't really say is right or wrong.

Many people think the standard layout is not ergonomic in the first place, that's why we have split / tented / ergonomic keyboards and DVORAK / Colemak / etc. layouts. Only you can say what works for you.

So, if you're new to touch typing, I think this setup *could* work for you since it is like ergonomic positioning on a standard keyboard but the idea that it gives more "wpm" is stupid. You have to move your fingers more for certain keys whereas the homerow has a distance of 1 key moving most of the time. Punctuation is used quite a bit so bjip has to move greater distances inward to press ,. / ' than if you were using a standard setup. In the end, if you get used to using all your fingers using your positioning, it doesn't matter if you feel like using that "ergonomic" one.

Also for the elbow thing, I have my keyboard and mouse pushed back at least 10 inches on the desk so it isn't much of a change for me. So I assume that is what the guy meant instead of a keyboard tray like many other people.

yeah, that is way uncomfortable for me.

the only other position like that I have seen is SDFV NJKL and it's surprisingly comfortable...at least for me it feels 100% natural.

I have broad shoulders, and I do find it a little uncomfortable using a standard layout keyboard. My hands seem too close together. I will try typing with the keyboard further away from my chest.

The 'truly ergonomic keyboard' is also tempting me :eyebrows:

if you got broad shoulders, split keyboard might be way better for you.

Do you mean to say a split keyboard might be better for me than the 'truly ergonomic keyboard'? Or do you mean, just more generally, a split might be better for me?

I had to bring up a picture of QWERTY to know exactly what you people mean.

Gotta say, SDFV NJKL looks pretty cool, but I'm sure it's fun to type letters in the top center, like T and Y

Dvorak equivalent is OEUK BHTN, I guess?

I actually think it's a very cool concept. I found it here:

http://typingsoft.com/typing.htm

That software, Stamina is what I use when I'm bored. I set it to phrase mode and just type for 5min or so. It's helped me ramp up my speed quite a bit (i type regular style).
