NEC APC-HA410 question
« on: Wed, 02 November 2011, 23:37:34 »
So I just discovered mechanical keyboards a few months ago, and have been hooked ever since. I currently have a Razer Black Widow (home keyboard), a IBM model M (work keyboard), and I just recently purchased a NEC APC-HA410 from a local thrift store. Now I've been able to find plenty of information on the Black Widow, and the model M, however, I've seen almost nothing on the HA410.

The one post I have seen talked about the keyboard having blue ALPS like switches, however my keyboard has white ALPS switches, and I'm assuming they are actual ALPS switches since the name is stamped on the top of each switch, are the blue ALPS like switches better? Does the switch color/manufacturer affect the value?

Does anyone know where I can find more information about this model keyboard? I was able to find the switch information, but was more curious about the keyboard's value.

NEC made high quality boards, since they were made in Japan. They are almost certainly complicated white ALPS switches, but would have to see a picture to know for sure. Complicated blue ALPS are better feeling IMO, but they are also rarer and therefore worth more.

The NEC in the thread you are talking about was not blue ALPS, but NEC's own switchtype that is similar to ALPS mechanism. With really old collectibles the value is whatever the random buyer you find wants it for, so you can't really get a good idea unless you sell it via auction. Would like to see pics of it. Congrats on a nice find.

Pictures can be found on my profile page (I created an album). For some reason I'm not allowed to link any URLs in my post yet.

Thanks for looking.

yeah, you need 15 posts for that. Thanks for putting the pics up on your profile.

I also noticed that the keyswitches have the ALPS logo on them.

Looks like a nice keyboard! How do you feel about ALPS vs. Buckling Springs vs. MX Blue?
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.

I think I like the buckling springs over the other two. Both the ALPS and buckling springs require slightly more force then the MX Blue, which I like, and the buckling springs are by far the loudest out of the bunch.

The ALPS would be a very close second. I like the force needed to depress the keys and the lovely noise they make.

Now the MX blue switches are awesome don't get me wrong (HUGE improvement from those domed POS keyboards they sell at best buy), but the other two seem to be a better fit for me.

Fun fact the blackwidow is the keyboard I dropped the most money on (about 111), the Model M I found in abandoned cube at work (yeah free), and the ALPS I picked up for 2.59.
