Does anybody have any experience with a full 35g Topre board?  They're all in non-ANSI layouts as far as I can tell, anybody ever modded an ANSI to 35g?

Thinking I might try it...

That sounds way too light... would be like if you exhale on the key it actuates.

While the 30/35g keys are fine on a variable force board once used to them, 35g uniform sounds the worst idea ever. Good luck (even) resting your fingers on the home row.

I picked up an HHKB and is just feels stiff compared to my cherry switches, I feel like I bottom out getting over the tactility of the rubber dome, but I don't have the same issues with my ergo clear boards.

According to itlnstln's research (he put Realforce domes to his HHKB Professional 2), HHKB uses different domes than 45g Realforce.

Based on my experience as an owner of both, HHKB feels significantly more heavier and has more initial resistance, which makes avoiding bottoming out nearly impossible. Realforce, on the other hand, has much less "bump" and feels smooth as butter all the way down.

I personally don't really mind bottoming out with Topre either way, the landing feels very smooth and pleasant.

I wouldn't trust anything ItlnStln says.  The domes are the same.  The Realforce has a metal plate.  The HHKB does not.

And search for the rubber dome Realforce 87U mod in my sig.

FWIW, I remember him comparing naked domes too. That way the plate won't make a difference.

I saw your rubber dome mod, Dude.  Just not entirely sure I want to do that for a full keyboard.  Also, not sure I want to source a 30g uniform board for a few hundred just to make it a donor board.  Or have to put it back together.

ItlnStln must have been smoking the pasta.

I pressed them "naked" on my desk. The domes even had different molding marks and the holes for the standoffs were different too.  Swapping mats changed the feel in the RF, so there was certainly no McRip effect.  Topre makes several types of switches, so it's not really a surprise the HHKB would be different.

To ripster's point, the plastic construction of the HHKB makes a bigger difference than the domes although, the RF domes in the HHKB did improve the feel a bit.

There was a JPN layout 30g fullsize Realforce on eBay awhile back that I almost bid on. Went cheap too, I think like $140 shipped. The layout is what made me pass. That ISO enter key is the devil.

That being said, I still really want to try out a 30g board. Who actually rests their fingers on the board with any amount of weight? I know I don't. To each his own though.
Check out my sales thread.

KMAC 2 w/ErgoClears
KBC w/Reds and Cherry doubleshots in imsto\'s case
G80-1800HAU w/ErgoClears
Realforce 87UB 55g

Yeah, I can't do that Japanese layout, which is why I'm considering doing the mod.  I think I may try a uniform 45g Realforce first to see if the feel changes that much from the HHKB.  For $500, I'm just not as impressed with the HHKB as I would have hoped.  I guess I'll throw it up in the classifieds shortly, want to give it another week or so.

I, honestly, wouldn't waste your money on a RF.  While it will be a little smoother on the way down, the bottom out and the upstroke are the same.  For all the money you'll spend, I don't think you'll be satisfied.

Yeah, I hear ya, and I really don't need to spend the money.  But I'm not sure I could live with myself if I never touch a plate mounted Topre...  What kind of GHer would I be?

A smarter, richer one, IMO.  But you never know, it might be the right switch for you.  I will say, however, that if you feel ergo clears are lighter than the HHKB's switches, you will probably feel the same about the RF.  They might be smoother, but they still lack the springiness that makes Cherrys seem lighter.

Hi, I dont have a topre board but just a suggestion - What if you are simply not a topre person? I think what you dislike may be just the design of the topre switch itself if you think about it, the tactile bump at the beginning of the travel distance.
You may enjoy some cherry MX switches boards more, even though they are cheaper. If you like lightness, have you considered MX reds?

Cheers

This.

This is basically the point I'm trying to get at.  Whether HHKB or RF, they're essentially the same switch. If you really don't like the HHKB, the RF isn't going to be different enough to change your mind.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, and I have a feeling that you're correct.  I'll give it another week or so and then keep your eyes on the classifieds for a cheap HHKB Type-S if you're looking for one.

When I typed on the HHKB, I always longed for my variable Realforce. After having a love/hate (mostly hate) relationship for 6~8 months or so, I've grown to like the HHKB feeling. I think it really sucked compared to Realforce, but not so anymore.

The other thing that's bothering me is that I'm not adjusting to the layout very quickly because I'm using the HHKB at work, and then switching to a Filco at home.  I'm worried about spending any more money on a case or damaging it by transporting it around so I'm a bit torn there too.  I have two Filco ergo clears to make that relationship easier ;)
