Problems going between linear and tactile?
« on: Sun, 25 December 2011, 09:20:01 »
Hello everyone! I have been looking around the forums here for a while, and after everything I read I decided to get a mechanical keyboard for work. I went with the Leopold FC500RT/ABN (mx browns), and I absolutely love it. I love it so much, in fact, that I decided to get a mechanical keyboard for home.
I was thinking about getting something with either mx blacks or reds, and I am wondering if it is hard to transition between the two switch types. I'm asking because I'm having a hard time transitioning between the mechanical keyboard at work and the rubber dome keyboard at home, and I'm unsure if it will be the same problem going between tactile to linear switches.
Thanks!

I have mainly been using a brown switched Filco and had a friend come over so pulled out my Linear R to show him and I had no issues with swapping over to it. Even my friend had no issue and he has only been running a mechanical brown Filco I gave him lastweek.

In my opinion you should go red not black. They feel quite similar to brown, though the red is smoother. Going from brown to black would be much more noticeable since they are heavier.

One thing I learned from having all these keyboards with different switches, you shouldn't use one for too long.  Try rotating them around monthly, weekly or whatever.  That way, your fingers aren't getting used to just one type of switch.  I've been using Cherry MX red for awhile and when I went back to my beloved black switch, now it feels a lot stiffer than I remember.

^ this, I love rotating my keyboards and switches on a weekly basis to get a different feel each week. I just love there are so many choices and you arent stuck with mininal choices if you like having variety.

I switch between various ALPS keyboards and MX Black regularly. So no, you won't have problems unless you are picky person, or maybe I am just an unpicky person? Take your pick.
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.

I know that my hands and arms do not agree with the black switches. They have to much resistance.

I think I'm a brown and red switch type of person.

I don't see the point. Why not just stick with the best?

Because "the best" is subjective.  What's best for one doesn't necessary mean it's best for others.

Once you thoroughly tested all the switches you can decide what is the best for you and just stick with it.

I don't know many GHers that can stick with just one favorite switch. I know I can't.

I alternate regularly between model f xt, model f 122, model m, mx clears, mx blues, and complicated ALPS. No issues. In fact, I prefer the variety. Sometimes I throw in cherry ML or scissors just for more variety ;)

I switch between my brown leopold and black 6gv2 a bit.

The blacks do indeed feel a bit heavy, but I love playing games on them. So I'm gonna try and sell my 6gv2, and get some reds.

I think I get it. Every switch has its own appeal, just like food or women.

I agree with your statement and will try a ton of different items to find what I feel is best for me and usually stick with that best item.  However with the keyboards I do definitely go back and forth between two favorites - my silent Realforce and Filco TKL with Red Switches.  Really think I love the silent topres the best and use them as my daily driver at work.  Then I come home to the Filco with reds and I'm feeling they are my favorites.  So I go back and forth between them and if you told me I could only have one keyboard, I would have a hard time choosing.
Current in order of preference:  RealForce 87U Silent White with variable weighted keys X 2, Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless with Linear Reds, Filco Number-pad, Poker with Linear Reds

Sold or returned:  Multiple Microsoft and Logitech keyboards, Das Keyboard Silent, Cherry 6140, RealForce 103UB, RealForce 86U, Filco Majestouch 2 full sized with Linear Reds

Changes in layout bother me more than switch type. I go for significant periods not using my laptop, and it is heartbreaking and frustrating to have to hunt and peck. And for 2 days at Christmas, I was using the kids' netbook. (I am a big guy, and my fingers do not fit "munchkin" keyboards!) Don't even get me started on cheap-ass track pads.

Mostly I use Model M/Fs, and thus have the freedom to span the spectrum of very light clicking to ham-fisted pounding with absolutely no difference in reaction from the keyboard.

Going from finger-thrusting at something that weighs approximately the same, or more than, a 2-liter drink bottle (well, 1.75 if it is spirits in glass) instead of a 12-ounce bottle or glass, that can be a bit unsettling. One New Year's Resolution is to find dependable non-slip mats for the undersides of all boards.

Down to actual key switches, I am having more and more trouble tolerating non-tactile switches. I love click, and although I sometimes feel lost without it, a clean smooth switch that actuates high up is not bad. I must admit that I have never owned reds or clears, but I am sure that I would be at least moderately happy with them. A switch that asked me to go more than a very few mm down before clicking, engaging, giving way, or doing "something" would be extremely annoying and disorienting.

And Finally, although this is heresy, the only good thing about rubber domes is that they ask for the majority of the force at the top, so once you have started moving down, you will probably make the connection. Not enough to compensate for mush, but something.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.

Well, it sounds like I just need to get a couple more keyboards! I might just get something with reds and blacks... Unfortunately, blues are too loud for home.

Get the reds if you want something lighter than browns, or blacks if you want something with more resistance. Both are smoother than browns.
