First Mechanical Keyboard: Das or Ducky?
« on: Wed, 28 December 2011, 02:19:04 »
I also still cannot decide whether or not I should get Blues or Browns, but that is not relevant.

The Ducky keyboards at tankguys are $80, but have a $20.32 shipping cost (to Canada, with "First-Class Mail International Package"); which brings me to a total of $100.32 (but according to Google Checkout, the shipping cost is only $13, bringing it to a total of $93 with "United States Postal Service - Priority Mail".. wat.).

If I pick up a Das in store, depending on where I get it, I have to pay $15-$20 more (tax incl.), but obviously don't have to wait for any shipping.

Is the Ducky better in any way? I know the Das has a glossy finish, but I'm ignorant of any other differences between the two. Any advice?

Also, wtf is with the shipping prices. I'm confused.

After reading a little about the 1k series from Ducky, I think I'm going to get the Das. I don't really want my first mechanical keyboard to be a quality/mediocre one. Unless I'm wrong?

If you've decided on DAS, your options are now the 'silent' version (browns), or the clacky version (blues). If you game and type a lot, browns might be a bit better. Blues aren't incredible to game on, but blues definitely have the most personality. CLACK CLACK

Honestly, I would. There's even a -$10 promo right now on Newegg's Canadian website, but.. dat logo. DAT LOGO. I can't stand it tbh. =.=

I won't lie to you: The 1k Ducky is not built as well as it could be but it's far from mediocre or trash.  Its not like it's going to fall apart on you.

The DAS is a fine choice; and was almost my first keyboard.

Ducky 1k series is fine for the money. It is great for those who are tight on budget while wanting all the bling features on mech board.

If I have to pick to two, I go for Das, but to be honest, I would get neither.

I would shop around in our classified section see who is letting go their filco or leopold (filco preferred).

Yeah, I think I might go with the Das I guess, then maybe get a Leopold/Filco in the future (I unfortunately don't have anything to trade for a Filco/Leopold with anyone in the classified section. Or rather, there's nothing available atm, most are already sold.)

International shipping costs to Canada makes me cry. If I was in the States, I would get a Leopold or Filco ASAP. Oh well.

Lmao. I've bought plenty of Rosewill products before, but the logo on the keyboard looks particularly unattractive to me. Even with the $10 gift card, shipping + tax brings it to the same price anyways, so not much of a point to get it? Unless I'm ignorant of its quality surpassing the others by far or something.

Paint it.

I want an RK-9000 in MX Blues.

If you really want, you can ask around the forums and someone might be able to do a proxy for you.

U won't be able to trade your Das with most of us here either. A lot of us here get quite put off by the shiny surface finish. GL

Yeah, that seems like the best option. I'll either lurk moar or make a post there myself for a Leopold/Filco, paying $50 shipping on elitekeyboads doesn't seem very optimal. Seems that Das isn't liked too much here, and the Ducky 1k series is frowned upon (at least among most). Anyways, thanks for all the help guys!

GH is a place of many opinions I'm finding. I'd say get what you want, and I would bet that everyone here would urge that!  As long as you aren't settling, I'm sure you will be pleased with your purchase.

Like wise everywhere else, don't blame GH. :)

I bought my first board without reading much in GH (or other forums) nor did I ask anyone here for opinions. I simply collected some  people's comments about different switches. Dig out reviews of the board I was interested in. I registered a GH account just so I could see some photos in this one review I was reading. I then just went ahead and bought one. Loved the board and I am still using it.

I feel bad for those who got confused from reading too much of what we talk about here lol.

Also an incredibly fair point.  Re-reading my post, it may have come across as a little snarky.  lol

The Das is a piece of crap, and their customer service is even worse.  I got one only to find 4 defective keys (the switches lock in the depressed position almost every time necessitating pliers be used to pull them back up), and their CSR's response was basically "too bad" because it had been too long since the purchase date.  Thank god for chargebacks.

Just get one of the old Model Ms from the 80s if you're looking for something reliable.
