ok, loads of people love blues, but loads of people love browns, i have a freind who has an mx blue keyboard, and its great, but id love to try  cherry browns... my problem is that i cannot try them out, and im scared of wasting money, i will use it for writing essays and gaming, so what to go for? i am getting the noppoo mini in white, but the switches are the last piece of the jigsaw :(

You're about to get a lot of people telling you that it's all up to personal preference. And they're right.

If you tried blues and they're great, then get blues. If you don't have the money to buy multiple keyboards, then start with what you know and like as a baseline, if you feel the urge to buy another board down the line (and you will!) then do so. Blues are a great place to start.

That said, some general opinions are that blues are great for typing and RTS games, red/black linear switches are better for FPS due to the ease of double tapping but less pleasurable for typing, and browns hang in the balance between.

My personal experience: don't like blues for gaming (SC2 and Quake), have had browns for over a year now and like them well enough for gaming and typing, but recently bought a cm storm with reds because I think I'll like them better for FPS.

Don't overthink it, if you have a rubber dome right now, you have nowhere to go but up.

If you are anything like me ... Get the browns.   You already know what the blues feel like so if you don't get the browns you will always wonder " what if ". (Which is exactly what I did when torn between browns and reds.  I went with the safe bet of "browns" and while I really loved them, I had a nagging feeling of " but what if I had tried reds !?1!"

So... I sold my browns and bought some reds. If I don't like them then I will sell the reds and buy some browns again.

You aren't marrying the keyboard. If it doesn't work out you can get a divorce and you actually get to keep more than 50% of your money.

Oh and like Shiruki said. If you are coming from rubber domes then any of them will be a vast improvement.   Be sure to do what the #1 key expert on the planet once told me ( and I came to agree with )

Give it two weeks to decide.  Basically give your fingers time to adjust to the feel and then make a deicision.... OH and start saving now for the next keyboard .... you're going to need it.

Buy used in the classifieds and dramatically reduce your losses if you "guess wrong" and would like to try something else.  That's my #1 advice.  If you're in CONUS shipping is cheap, and there's lots of great people selling great boards.  You can try and resell and pretty much only lose shipping as long as you take care of things.

You can also try a cheaper brown option like the Compaq server boards which can be found for cheap.  You can try the feel of the switch without needing to go to a "boutique" board just to try it.

That's actually how I got to test the browns.  I called one of the local PC shops and while they didn't sell mech boards they happen to have an old  Compaq board with the trackball missing that they allowed me to come in and type on for a few minutes to give me an idea of what it would feel like.

Absolutely !! I totally called WASD to change shipping methods and address to hopefully get it by tomorrow. I'm thinking Monday is more likely though.

After selling the Filco and trying to go back to my 5 year old Saitek Eclipse.... I have been reluctant to even turn the PC on at home. That thing just feels like ****.

Oh god, I know what you mean. I had a Logitech g15 before my Ducky and I wouldn't wish the torture of going back after typing on cherries on anyone.

So, /kl or webwit said that?

But to OP. All down to personal preference but if I would buy my first keyboard again, it would be with brown switches. It might have given me some time until have the urge to buy another switch. But only 'might' :-P

But anyway, most likely you'll buy multible keyboards in the forseeable future anyway.

I plan to right a review specifically comparing my impressions of reds to browns since that's what so many people like myself have an issue with deciding.   Since I already trust so heavily in the quality area of WASD and Filco it's going to come down to the switches themselves.  I've tried to immitate what I think it will feel like by holding my blues below the tactile point and just raising and lowering them there but that is a mistake.   The little plastic "clicker" in the blue switch has an obvious rattle and feel to it. But if the reds feel about that weight then I am sure I will love them.
