Dyesublimation into black keycaps?
« on: Mon, 06 February 2012, 17:24:27 »
Hey guys I have been hovering the Unicomp website and I see they have this customize profile which is nice cause you pay $10 more and you can get some color change in the layout, but only from the stock colors not the special colors. For example you can have the black housing board with the IBM color scheme buttons instead of the silver ones. What I would like to know since Black color is also included into their production/stock color and would be lovely to get the Classic 104 key with all black keycaps but can they dyesublimate the legends on them?

I think I read somewhere that dyesublimation can not be done on black keycaps... also Unicomp dont have the black keys with legends on them for order, just blank black keys. Any info would be nice, thanks.

Well technically you could dyesub on black pbt, but not be able to see it except under the most ideal lighting conditions, at just the right angle. It's generally quite pointless which is why no one bothers. Thats why you see stuff like the Realforce charcoal/very dark grey caps with dyesub. It's subtle, but still viewable in a larger variance of lighting conditions since there is enough color difference where they are still readable.

I understand a black color dye legend on black PBT keycap is pointless but how about red dye color legend, or blue, or white?

No, can only use a darker color than the plastic color for dyesub. Lighter colors is only possible with pad print. Lasering gets a creamy beige color.

Some guy tried to order black-on-black Unicomp caps a while back and said that it turned out terribly.

It's a dye. Not a paint. #physics
