Looking to buy a Leopold in Newfoundland Canada
« on: Sat, 11 February 2012, 17:22:45 »
Are there any retailers besides elitekeyboards who sell Leopold keyboards? I'd really like to get a Tenkeyless Tactile Touch keyboard with the MX-Brown switches, but the price is a little steep once the $35 shipping has been tacked on.
Newegg and NCIX both sell DAS keyboards, but from what I've been reading, the quality of the Leopolds is higher than that of the DAS Model S.

Are there any other brands I should check out? I'm hoping to save a few dollars, but not if it means going with lower quality. Suggestions appreciated, thanks!

There's no other place to get Leopolds in Canada as far as I know, and it's even worse than the $35 shipping since you'll also be paying about another $30 in duties to get it across the border. I learned this the hard way and it added more than 50% to the base cost of the keyboard.

People here don't like the DAS because of the shiny finish the case has, which shows and dust and fingerprints more readily, but there's really nothing wrong with it, at least not the new version. The old one apparently had some problems that were worked out.

Rosewill mechanical keyboards are available on... can't remember if it was NCIX or newegg.ca... and are pretty cheap. They are considered to be pretty good /but/ a lot of people seem to get dead on arrival keyboards that they have to RMA for a replacement, at least according to the reviews. Some people also complain about how the stabilizers in the bigger keys squeak because they are not lubed.

If you are going to get a DAS, you should get it from http://directcanada.com/ as they have it for about $30 cheaper than elsewhere. Most people don't seem to know about this place but it's very good. I've bought a trackball, two mice and a heat sink from them.

If you are willing to pay a bit more, WASDkeyboards.com is considered to be really good. A lot of people say it is even better than Filco. I've bought a keyboard from them and it costs less in shipping than a keyboard from elitekeyboards and I think they declare it a different way or use a different carrier because I don't think I had to pay duties on it, but I can't recall exactly...

You mentioned that you are looking for brown switches, but if you would be interested in blue switches, I have a blue switch tenkeyless Leopold and blue switch DAS that I'm looking to sell and I'm in Quebec so shipping should be much cheaper and you certainly won't have to pay duties.

If your not against buying used make a wanted to buy thread and look through the classifieds. Been seeing lots of leopolds on there lately. And shipping isn't too bad from the US.

If you do buy one from someone in the US, go for USPS first class (~$17 for a tenkeyless) instead of USPS priority (~$27). If you can get them to declare it as a gift under $60 you won't have to pay duties.

After my first purchase from elitekeyboards I've been getting most of my stuff from the classifieds.

Hmm, thanks for the heads up, I checked DirectCanada for Leopold, but not for Das. $115 is very reasonable, epsecially since the site offers free shipping.

So I think I may just go ahead and order the Das Keyboard there, but I have one question. Does the Das keyboard have a removable cable, like the Leopold? I'm putting the money into a good keyboard because I want something that will last a long time, and I have pets, I liked that the Leopold used mini-usb for the cable, because if a pet chews up the chord it can be replaced.

And thanks so much for the advice guys

No, the DAS does not have a removable cable. The Rosewill does though.

Okay, so possible options I'm looking at for the moment include:
Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Touch
Das Model S Ultimate Silent
Rosewill RK-9000BR

All of which use Cherry Mx Brown switches
The Leopold is my ideal, however at $110, with $30 shipping, I'd still go for it, but I fear customs taxes on top of that.
The Das is nice, and I can get it for $115, I believe with free shipping too. But I don't like that the chord is not removable, and that it has a glossy finish that picks up fingerprints.
Not entirely sure on the Rosewill, because the brand is known for cheap electronics with the low price at the cost of quality. Upon my short search I see that people are saying that after just weeks of ownership the key lettering is wearing off, and that keys squeak.

So the Leopold is my ideal, but I may go with the Das if I can't find another vender to buy the Leopold from. Any other suggestions to look at before I go ahead and order the Das?

I've been thinking about selling my Leopold tenkeyless with browns, but haven't posted in the classifieds yet.  I bought it barely used from a guy on here from Washington state, to avoid paying shipping/customs from EK.  I didn't use the stock alpha/num keys for long before I put on my Cherry PBTs, so lettering will still be like new.  I did void the warranty by opening up the board to lubricate the stabilizers, since they started to squeak a bit.  Let me know if you're interested in a lightly used board. :)

just to clarify.
it is not set in stone that you will have to pay customs when you buy from EK.
If the value of the good is not very high they won't even bother with it most of the time.
I had purchased 2 leopold TKL / 87u from EK and did not have to pay customs on either of the leopolds. The 87u however... I did @_@.

Thanks for all the information guys, I just went ahead and ordered the Leopold, and now I'm crossing my fingers for it to not go through customs. Can't wait for it to arrive. Estimated 6-10 days if it doesn't go through customs.

I suppose I'll probably make a thread with my first impressions when it arrives. This is my first mechanical keyboard, curious as to whether or not I'll be able to beat my 130wpm hump on it.

I had great results getting my Filco TKL w/browns through PCHome.  Shipping was $20, it didn't pass through customs (I'm never lucky that way with packages from the US, but this EMS package from the far east sailed through with no fees) and the price was pretty competitive.  Anything else I've acquired has been used on GH or found in a dumpster :D

If you ordered it from elitekeyboards it will probably go through customs, mine did.
