Change springs to G80-3000LQCDE-2
« on: Wed, 15 February 2012, 07:29:36 »
Hi to all,

even if this is my first post i lurked the board from months, and i'd finally choosen to buy two mech keyboards:

* at home, the qpad mk-50 with blue switches
* at work, the Cherry G80-3000LQCDE-2 (clear switches).

I have both now and i absolutely love the qpad with blue.

At work, i bought the cherry with clear to avoid rumor and bother my workmates.

Now, i don't like too much this clears; i found them to stiffy.

I would like to switch the springs of these clears to blue springs (probably from another cherry), to get the tactoclear mod (am i right?)

I'm asking if it's possible to "extract" a blue spring from one of the mk-50's keys, to test it with a clear (and so avoiding to buy a cherry keyboard with blue for nothing).

I really don't want to "unsolder" (i don't know the technical term) the key :biggrin1:

While the qpad isn't plate mounted (i don't think) the LEDs are going to make separating the housing very difficult unless you either break the housing, or desolder the LED first.  otherwise, pulling out the spring will be easy.  there's 2 youtube videos in the cherry switch wiki that show how.

the mk-50 doesn't have the LEDs, it's not like the mk-80, mk-85 at least for what i've seen.

without leds it's possible? i'll post some photos when i go home.

in that case, it should be very easy.  check out the cherry switch wiki, under the moding section.

thanks for help, i did some photos to show you mk-50 switches.

is it possible then to get the spring without desoldering?

No, because they are plate mounted, you would need to de-solder.

ok thx for reply, i will go blind for a cherry with blues and mix it with my current cherry with clear.

blue and brown have the same spring? Are they similar? I can't get ergo clear (brown spring?) so i'll go for blue.

How long do you have your two keyboards?
Just asking, because I found the clears a bit stiff in the beginning as well. After a short period of time though, I began liking them more and more.

a week for mk-50, and three days for cherry g80.

Yes i feel better than the first day, and i won't take the cherry with blues so soon; i want to give to clears more time. But the blues are so comfortable and speedy!

Blues, Browns and Reds all have the same spring, if you use any of those springs with clear stems you'll end up with ergo clears.

Yeah I would have suggested that :)
I guess you will end up buying another keyboard with blues anyway -> geekhack-syndrome.

the wiki (and your contributions) are a great resource, but self promoting is for politicians.... i'll pass.

Hmm, maybe you haven't noticed, but Ripster has to run in some kind of election every couple of weeks.  So don't criticize a man in constant campaign mode for sounding like a politician.  Oh, and in America, it's not a crime to promote oneself, it's actually a cultural trait.  It may not be the most appealing American cultural trait to a Canadian, but it's part of every American psyche none-the-less.  Inside every American is a tiny P.T. Barnum trying to huckster his way out.

@OP:  It sounds like you simply bought the wrong keyboard.  My advice:  sell that G80-3000LQCDE-2 (clear switches), and get one that you like.  Or better, if you can afford it, is to simply box it up, and keep it for your collection.  Look, you're going to buy more keyboards anyway, so you might as well do it sooner than later.  And buying the one you want is much easier and faster than switching 107 tiny springs, or however many keys are on that G8-3000.

yay i don't actually like too much this cultural trait (i'm italian anyway not a Canadian)

if i buy the cherry with blues my workmates will complain about rumor. If i go with ergo clear, maybe they will accept it and i get a good tradeoff.

Anyway, i think you're right, so maybe i'll box it up for the collection.

i think that Ripster is.. a funny actor. In the long way maybe he's too much pedant, but he brings forum to a less-so-serious form. I don't know really well english (and i imagine you got it from my posts), so it's hard to explain :P
