Spilled water on my Filco
« on: Thu, 23 February 2012, 16:15:08 »
Happened yesterday... in slow motion.

I basically spilled some water on my board (fullsize Filco Majestouch 2 with browns)... didn't really react fast enough to unplug or even turn it upside down.  And then I kept assuming it was dry and trying it out... which of course did some more damage.

It's basically fried: it no longer gets detected through the PS/2 port, only USB, most of the keys either don't work or press multiple keys at once, and the windows key seem to be permanently pressed as well.

I wanted to just buy another one, but can't seem to find them anywhere for a decent price ($150)... and only seem to find them offered for $265.
I guess I'll settle for a Rosewill with browns.

Is there anything I can do with the parts at least?

Feel like such a n00b.

That's ballz.... sorry to hear.  Salvage what you can for your next board (keycaps, casing, stabiliser pins... just in case you need to repair your next board)!  Look on the bright side... somewhere out there, there's a board waiting for you. :rip:

Thanks everyone... the hardest part is deciding what new one to get.

I suppose I'll try to salvage what I can.

i make a conscious decision to put my drinks on my left and around a ruler length away from me. This poker has so saving grace if a spill happens.

Water LOL.... i only drink coffee.

Bummer.

It pays to read the Wiki when something like that happens:

This page gives me so much hope.

It's for this reason I keep my Unicomp and Quickfire plugged in the front.
I have a pressing need for some reason to keep drinks near me when I'm using the computer and I fear the day I don't unplug the cord fast enough.

That's terribly unfortunate man, I hope you find something comparable to your Filco. I would take it apart at least and see where the damage hit, just for curiosities sake.

I saw those postings, but sadly there aren't any full size Filcos with brown switches.

Amazon has decentish prices on TKLs. But, don't give up hope!  Read ripster's wiki, and give it time. I got a free MacBook Air that someone spilled Monster into. I took it apart and cleaned it with high-test isopropyl alcohol, and it works perfectly!  :-D

You would easily sell the keys and the case in classifieds, no idea how much for but better than nowt

My drinks go on the missus' desk, I have once up-ended a full cup of coffee on my desk but thankfully I was quick enough to get the filco out of the way... mopped it up with my desk mat and hosed

You could get a replacement for $150USD including shipping at PCHome.

The shipping is actually $10USD now.

Sorry to hear about your keyboard!! =(

If you're gonna drink next to your keyboard make it EverClear for maximum safety.

LOL!  Or do as I do, and drink only bottled water and keep the bottle on the floor or on a separate table well off to the side.

Repeat after me:  I WILL NOT PUT ANYTHING ON MY DESK THAT I DO NOT WANT ON MY KEYBOARD!  That's a corollary to my "Do not leave anything in the car that you do not want stolen" rule. ;-)

Pity your Filco got drowned. Next time you should dry it at least 24h, preferably 48h before plugging it to test again.

This is like when a friend gets cancer and everybody starts telling him he should have been drinking green tea.

Me thinks green tea got him into trouble in the first place!

Hmm... well i know im not really one to say anything because I don't know much about internal electronics either. Have you tried extreme measures in rescueing the keyboard? Taking it apart and drying it out with a hair dryer and then probably putting it someplace near silica gel to take all the moisture out... and then finally if that still doesn't work then taking it to one of those electronics shops where they can probably test which pieces are fried due to short circuits and probably trying to replace just those parts?

just make sure all that effort doesn't add up to 100USD because if it will add up to that amount... then it is better to indeed buy a new board.

... Sorry for your loss.. :(
I once almost spilled soda on my keyboard too, but at the fraction of a second while the soda falling in slow motion and flood all over my Filco,
I somehow managed to pull my keyboard towards me, barely getting out of the way.

Since then, I always put my beverages at least a foot away from my work space. Have to stretch my left or right arm to get my beverage now.

Well... the TKL keyboards say that it is better if you don't stretch your arm to reach for your mouse. I think your drink is bad ergonomics.... :D just trolling.

you are right. I do prefer TKL over standard. Unfortunately, I purchased 2 of my Filcos when TKL wasn't out, then I fell into deep thought whether I should puchase TKL too. Came to conclusion I should just wait until my standard Filco dies.. D:

Then again, maybe I should keep my drink close...? haha
