  • Topre, or not Topre? That is the question.
I want to mod a NEO KB-87 (Wireless) that currently has mostly MX Black switches to part Reds to make it "variable weighted".  The browns or clears I might put in the arrow keys and the Home/End group.

I'm looking for about 40 light springs, about 20 Red stems and about 15 Brown or Clear stems.

Let me know what you have and a price, even if you only have a few you could part with.  I can do this a little at a time if I have to.

(I know I can get 50 Red switches for $1.15/each and 25 Brown switches for $1.10/each at WASD Keyboards, but I don't need the whole switch.)

Thanks.

In order to avoid confusion I would suggest being specific about what you are referring to. E.g. Brown, red, and blue springs are equivalent.

I know they are the same.  Why do you think I lumped them all together like this, "Brown/Blue/Red" and then in the post just referred to them as "light springs".  Brown and Red stems are different and so I specified how many of each I am looking for.  I said "15 Brown *OR* Clear" because I'll take either of them even though they also are different from each other.  I would actually like to have some of each.

FYI, I just got a PM and agreed to purchase 120 Brown stems with "light springs".  I could still use some Red stems, but it's not essential as I think Black and Red stems are equivalent.  I have the springs I can use them with the Black stems.

Wonder how much the total cost on that was then. Vortex said at one point there would be a "group buy for our Geekhack friends" but it has yet to materialize. =\

I don't need any blues.  I have a bunch and don't plan to use them.  Do you need black switches or just stems/springs?  I have about 50 black stems and springs and I have a PCB and Backplate from a WYSE keyboard that I stripped the keycaps off of that has 101 Black switches.  I'd send it to you, you'd have to desolder them.

i'm mildly interested in 40-50 black springs, if they're relatively cheap, for an experiment. let me know how much you want.

PM me your mailing address and I'll give you 50 Black springs.  "Shipping" would be, what, forty cents.  I'll cover that, too.
All I ask in return is the next time you want to sell something cool, give me a heads up first. ;-)

Huh... You found me AND bought 120 of my new brown stems and springs BEFORE I even saw this thread... If anyone else here wants the other half of my stash be my guest and send me a PM. 3 stems and springs per dollar + shipping. Or the whole switch for 60cents apiece + shipping. If you want whole switches you have 2 choices: 1. PCB-mounted could ship immediately 2. Plate-mounted would ship in May

Are you interested in Black switches?  I have a PCB and plate from a WYSE terminal that I just took the key caps from.  It has 101 Black switches attached.  I haven't the time to desolder them and don't need the stems and springs alone.

It costs me ~$10 to desolder a board. And I have no use for blacks. So I'll pass.

Techspray desoldering braid is the fastest and easiest way to desolder a board, but it's expensive ****...

I'm still looking for Red stems.  Any number of them between say, 5 and 100.  I'll use my black ones if I can't find red ones.  I would just rather red feeling switches looked red, too, since I'm putting the light springs in the currently black switches.  Since I have enough Brown stems and springs coming to do the whole board, I may just go that route.  Hey, are Cherry G80-119000 switches PCB or Plate mounted?

I ordered it from Taobao through Taobaobee many weeks ago.  They keep asking if I want to wait for it to be available or cancel my order.  I just tell them I'll wait.  It's the Aluminum case and Purple LED Limited Edition.  The seller says they will be available mid to late April.

I am interested in the black switches in particular the stems. I can do desoldering. I would offer 20 red sliders from my Poker. How does that sound?

I would have to let you know the red sliders are not as smooth as vintage blacks and may feel a little scratchy if you try to feel it by pushing the key slowly.

Do you know the reason they are not as smooth?  Lower quality manufacturing process?  The smoothness is what I like about reds.  If the vintage blacks are smoother I would prefer to just use them.

I don't know any reasons behind it, but here is my experience.

I don't own any blacks, so I cannot really compare them directly. I only have comparison between red from my Poker and brown stems from wasdkeyboard. I scratched the sliding surface with my finger nail and tried to reflect lights of the surface. I feel more plastic grain on reds compared to clear and brown stems. I lubed them and it felt much better, but I don't know if it is the lube.

You may not notice it, but it is generally accepted in KBDMania that reds are more grainier than vintage ones.

So, no deal? How much would you want for the black stems?

Vintage switches were lubed in the factory, while new ones aren't. Red plastic may harden with a rougher surface as well.

How do you know whether it was lubed in the factory? Did you do some kind of experiment?

It may be red plastic issue, but I am no expert in plastic engineering. Is it generally accepted that lighter colored plastics harden with a rougher surface?

Deskthority has the info on vintage lubed switches. When you open them up there is lube on the sliders that touch the crosspoint leaf. But none there on new switches.

I have a relatively new switch and I see lube on the metal leaf and on the legs of the red stem. I will look for the info on the vintage switches. Thanks!

That's another thread. The one I was thinking of had pictures of old lubed shafts vs new unlubed shafts.

Poker may be lubing their switches themselves. Or specifically ordering them from cherry prelubed.

Edit: iBro and megnin orders are shipped. I have "exactly" 53 sets left.
