WASD Keyboard V1 or V2?
« on: Wed, 11 April 2012, 00:41:05 »
Hey guys, new guy here!

So I am thinking in purchasing my very first mechanical keyboard and have decided to go with a Cherry MX Blue switch.

My current number one choice would be a WASD Keyboard (Really great customization and awesome keycaps also has great reviews, good quality build, in overall, pars up with Filco, Leopold and other good brand).

But my question is, should I wait for the V2 to come out by the end of the year or should I just buy the V1 which is available now.

The V2 will come out until the end of the year including new features:
-USB Hub
-Different Case Design
-Red LED Indicator
-Detachable Cable
-PBT Keys (Actually the PBT keys are being developed right now and they hope to have them available by the end of May).
-They will also have a white backlit version too.

As you can see, I guess most of the new features are not really necessary but just the opinion from you guys, should I wait?

Other keyboards that I have in mind, if you guys prefer them than WASD please tell me.

I am really thinking in getting a CM Storm QuickFire. They are really cheap and I can just buy a few keycaps on ebay. Read review and it seems to be as good as FIlco and Leopold.

Other keyboard that I am thinking too are Filco and Leopold.

Thanks for all the advice and help!

If you're into those features (I know some people hate detachable cable and backlight) then go get the v2. If you just want a simple, solid keyboard, get the v1. Either way it won't disappoint.

Also I'm interested in that new case, and if I can buy it for my V1 ;) I'm not a big fan of the current WASD case.

Thanks for the reply guys!

I am waiting for mechanicalkeyboards.com to launch at April 16 so that I can see other available keyboards and broaden my options.

I am now really interested in RACER keyboard, it looks really pretty especially with the green backlit. Gosh, the more I research, the more indecisive I become. There are so many option/brands that I have no idea which one to chose. Any advice?

Should I also go tenkeyless or fullsize?

Unless you really need the keypad go tenkeyless. Your hands are closer together, it's smaller on the desk, and waay cuter. But as always personal opinion.

You can always buy a separate (non mechanical, don't ruin yourself over such pointless things !) keypad if needed.

I prefer to have a tenkey for a traditional look, but a lot of people prefer tenkeyless for the ergonomic benefit and smaller size. There's no way they look cuter though ;)

Yes! I got the same idea Djuzuh. Tenkeyless just looks way cleaner, cuter, space saver and it feels right. Though my gf thinks otherwise, therefore where the confusion comes. Too bad WASD Keyboard does not have tenkeyless. Where do you guys purchase custom keycaps? Does you guys all purchase from WASD or is there any other website? Another question, if I do buy a backlit tenkeyless, where should I buy keycaps that also allows the led light to show?

If you use the numpad, get it.

I use the numpad all the time and even bought a laptop with a numpad. I use every key (except Caps Lock, which is now Delete) and would not want to have to toggle things like NumLock.

If you don't use it, though, save the space and weight.

Perhaps also important, the little ones seem to have a higher resale value, and you should plan to churn through at least a couple of boards before you find your true love.

To provide for calling forth the Militia  to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Yeah, Since it will be my very first, I guess I might go with Tenkeyless since the resale value is higher. Thanks for the awesome advice fohat. I do use the numpad sometimes for data/spreadhseet but a lot and I am also used in using the top row numbers instead of numpads.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere but is there any idea of what the WASD v2 will look like? I'm not sure if I should wait for that or choose something else.

I've never release any pictures to the public. Once the design is finalized, I may entertain everyone with some teasers :D

mm, I've got mixed feelings about that; worried that it'd just be another filco clone.

Wait, WASD, is there going to be a v1 87 key? Or are they only gonna be v2 (detachable wire)? And will the new cases be compatible with v1? :\

@OP I really don't have much input on to which keyboard you should pick, I'm sure they are both great. I would just really like to thank you for genuinely doing your research about what boards you are interested before making a thread. It's a refreshing change from the usual, "Hai guise I play FPS and type sum. Which board is the best?!?!?11111one"
Unicomp Space Saver (buckling spring) Silicon Graphics (dampened cream alps) KBC Poker (ghetto reds)
