Help with Mech keyboards!!
« on: Mon, 09 April 2012, 17:15:18 »
Hello,
Im new to geekhack, some1 told me that here is where i can get the best advice if im looking for a new keyboard.
Atm im using a Logi g19 (but due to problems im going to give it back) and now im looking for a MECH keyboard.

The only1 i could tryout until now was the RAZER Blach Widow BLUE switchs.

So im looking for advices:
The keyboard will be used for normal write/office applications and surfing :) and for Games like BF3/Sc2/D3/LOL/CS:S/...

Normaly i play late at night so i use a lighted keyboard (G19) but i think there arent that many Mech keyboards out there with backlight.

I was looking into corsair/steelseries/razer    (k90/60 // g7/g6v2  // black widow ultim)
But i dont really have any experience with the Mech keyboards.

What is really important:
I dont like it, if i use the keyboard that after some weeks the WASD prints are gone. (many review that it happens with the steelseries g6v2)
Durability
Lighted if possible!!
maybe with numpad...
keyboard layout will be GERMAN.

I hope u guys have some good advice and tipps for a newbie in this area.
Thx in advance for the help

I'm newbie too :baby:
FYI, I'm a FPS gamer too, playing BF3, MW3 ..etc.

Sounds like, you have to test the Cherry MX linear switch.
You have to decide you want linear or tactile.
Check out the wiki in here:
http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=START+HERE+--+The+Geekhack+Mechanical+Keyboard+Guide+-+Includes+Glossary+and+Links
And then decide between blue/brown or black/red.

I use G110&G510 before, something I have to sacrifice. Like ... do you want media keys? volume roller? G-keys? windows disable key?
And there is no mech keyboard with LCD screen yet.

There're full size backlit MECH keyboard out there. Like ... xarmor, deck, bwu, ducky shine ...
If no backlit, there are so many choices. Even other type of mechanical switches.

No body can tell you which switch is better for what you using. It is a very personal touch & feel. You have to try yourself.

But one thing I can tell you as a gamer, you will die less in FPS games!!!!
I can dodge bullets, run away from multiple enemies much faster even after this over power suppression patch in BF3!
Mechancial keyboard keypress response is super fast!!!!

For sure other experts could give you more useful advice
BTW, Welcome to GH!

Deck Legend is a Mechanical back lit keyboard, there keys are dye sub printed so the legends on the keys will not fade very quickly. And the Legend has the num pad.
Deck is bit on the heavy side for a keyboard about 3 or 4 pounds.

I don't know about the layout being in German, you have to email the company about German.
You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

As for back lighting, the easiest to get is the ducky shine or deck, deck>ducky. (ducky has bad rep here, so does Black wid) There's another backlit, I think its called the race, I can't remember, but you will need to hunt for that one.  There was a group buy but I think you missed it.  If not backlit, i recommend filco, leopold, or wasd.  Personally I like blue and red switches.  Both are nice, I like reds solely for FPS games, blues for everything else, so I pretty much use blues.  Link for more opinions, go to bottom. http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=START+HERE+--+The+Geekhack+Mechanical+Keyboard+Guide+-+Includes+Glossary+and+Links

Das is good as well, its just not as sleek, but it does have a usb hub

Deck, ducky, and Razor already mentioned.  I was looking at Razor before I came here, but there are a lot of threads here and elsewhere about their quality issues.  Ducky has a bad rap from some vocal people here, but good elsewhere.  Deck has weird legends, but have a good rep.

New on the scene is the CM Storm Trigger.  The jury is still out on those, but their tenkeyless version has a very good reputation.

Do you have a specific budget or spending range you could provide us with? This would help narrow things down a bit.

Since you didn't mention price, I'll assume that you simply want the best.

You DID mention durability though, so...
Deck! (do they offer German layouts?)

Deck keyboards are pricey, but they're bulletproof.

Don't sweat it, no matter what... As long as you're buying a plate-mounted Cherry MX 'board, you really can't go wrong.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

First of all, thx for the feedback. Until now i just tested the MX blue on the razer BWU and i didnt like it. i Think i will like more the red/black MX switch but i will try to test them.
What i read until now is that the g6v2 from steelseries is good but the Key Caps after 1 month are completly used and the color starts to fade. (:S:S).
