Hello all,

Stuffes from MKC again. It's anodized aluminum keycaps this time. Their qualities are much better than those zinc keycaps since they were made by CNC individually.

They are top row profile (R4 row). The printed ones are laser-etched.

I still have some leftovers, please contact me if you need these

FYI, loong is kinda a Chinese version of dragon.  Unlike dragon, loong represents something good, it also represents the Chinese emperor long time ago.

Now, I have to decide which one(s) I want.

Those Loong (dragon?) ones look really nice, but piracy is in my heritage, so maybe I should go with the jolly roger. Luckily I have until may 10'th to pick.

Yeah, I noticed that, and picked ASAP.

I was tempted to get two, and I'm surprised these haven't sold out yet.

Retaking the accounting exam will drive me nut... *_*

Got some orders shipped today. Because of the rollback, the new keycaps including alien, punisher, cherry logo, and yinyang got lost. I'll update those later.

Got mine!  They are beautiful!  The only thing I noticed is that the black one has a very tight fit, and the others are a bit looser, but its workable.

Damn does the purple one look awesome, I almost regret not having bought a keycap in this color as I originally intended too.

I have a purple loong letter 2 and a purple blank if you would want one or the other.

Also, feng, one of my others won't fit on the stem. you think i could make the gap wider with a file?

No thanks xD. Not right now.

I have two keycaps from him coming already. Will see how it turns out. Maybe in the future one day :P.

The stem is a little tight on mine also.  Otherwise it looks nice. =P

tolerances i guess.

Indeed: If you're even .001 off (probably much less), it'd be the difference between loose and fitting well.
I hope mine arrive soon! Despite what the OP says, I' paid a while ago :p

there are two tolerances involved (ie, two items subject to sample variation). first, the stem, second the mating bit of the key. CNC mills are subject to machining variation. more aptly, the cost of a mill is directly related to its precision :P. similarly, molding precision, wear etc will determine the size of the stem. if you're far enough from the mean on either or both of these two parts, you will get a poor or non-fit.

anyway, i would suggest filing away at the stem a little as opposed to the cap, as you'll file through the anodized layer if you file through the cap.

yes, but if i file away at the stem, i'm making any other cap i want to put on it later too loose. I don't particularly want to swap stems later when i want to swap caps.

I wouldn't. The aluminium of the keycap will form a thin oxide layer within seconds that should sufficiently protect it. Anodizing normally just increases the thickness of the protective oxide layer and adds the opportunity for adding dyes (interstitial "defects") for colouration.

how far through does the dye usually penetrate? basically, i would worry about filing through the colored layer (they look so nice :))

....on the part of the key that is hardly even visible when it's not on a stem?

Should be under about 50 microns. You'd file through it for sure, and it'd be shiny on parts of the bottom. Still, I'd much rather do this than damage my stems.

Stem costs 3 bucks at most
Alum keycap cost you 15

If I break a stem on one of my plate-mounted keyboards, it'll cost me a lot more than $15 in re-soldering the whole thing.

Eh, To each his own. I have my plans for what I'll do with the keycap. I will file it (If necessary), and grab some LDPE to protect the stem. Until then, I'll wait for shipping.

Speaking of which, I'm glad to see the OP is updated with shipping notifications.

Mine arrived, and look excellent! The "cherry" front print is only a little off, but it's acceptible to me.

Now about filing: Does anyone know a decent file or set of files I can get? What about other methods.?I was considering some sandpaper and some scrap metal.
