Forgive me, brothers, for I have sinned.

Hey guys,

I know its been a while. Everything's been well but I haven't really had time for trollin' the old forums anymore. I built a computer! Phenom II X4 955, 4GB DDR3, 1.25 TB total storage, GTX 460 1GB, etc. :P I skimped on the keyboard because I just needed one that functioned to get the system up and running. I'll have money for a good one soon, within the next month or so. What's the latest and greatest? I noticed X-Armor is gone? And so is the RK-9000 too... Was considering getting a Unicomp but I still think buckling springs are heavy as hell... I would go with something with Browns but they're all so expensive... Was considering waiting for a deal on a Blackwidow, am I right in saying that's probably the best bet? Right now I'm using a Rosewill RK-800G, which, despite being teh domez, is actually not bad at all. On the level of Keytronic boards, certainly. And it only cost me 10 bucks! So I'm happy with using this for the next month or so. Oh yeah, and I still get the student discounts on the Das Keyboards, are they still regarded with any sort of respect or are the considered trash now? I saw them trending downwards last year...

Thanks guys,
Mark

The Das hasn't changed at all. I think it's just not considered "the keyboard" by people around here, for whatever reason. I know I'm not a huge fan of the glossy keyboards, but if you're considering a black widow, that clearly doesn't bother you.

Personally, I don't feel the buckling springs are particularly heavy, but the browns are certainly lighter, as is my HHKB. I rather like the resistive feel to them, as I don't really bottom them out all that much.

If you're looking at the Unicomps, you can get a tenkeyless leopold with browns for only $10 more, assuming EK comes back online. Though I'm not sure if that's what you want, considering everything else you mentioned is a full size keyboard. The Das is still cheaper than the leopold though, since it ships for free.
HHKB Pro 2 -- Custom UNIX layout Unicomp Customizer 101 -- IBM Model M 1391401 (modded to UNIX layout) -- IBM 1397000 (also UNIX layout) -- SSK in UNIX layout -- Model F 122 key in UNIX layout (Soarer USB "native")

I'm not a fan of glossy either, but for its price I don't mind it. I just got mine in and put the wasd keys it came with on it. I haven't used it yet.

If you're gonna look for a cheap blackwidow I'd say to watch amazon.
