Keycaps and O-Rings
« on: Fri, 14 September 2012, 13:18:46 »
Hi Geekhack. I have a few questions that hopefully I can get answered :D I'm currently waiting for my new mechanical keyboard to come in. It's a CM Storm QFP brown switches. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129003

I remember from my previous CM Storm QFR keyboard that the spacebar was different. I was looking at qtan's shop and fell in love with these PBT keycaps. http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/104-PBT-Rainbow-engraved-keycaps-MX-cherry-Switches-keyboard-Filco-Noppoo-/300662466894?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item4600e1294e

However I'm not sure if that set will fit all of my keys on my mech kb, more specifically the spacebar. Will it be able to fit? If not are there any other suggestions on PBT caps that would fit?

Additionally I'm trying to find a good site that sells O-Rings. However, I don't know what type of O-Rings to get. My purpose is just to find a set that are able to dampen the sound of the cherry switches when I bottom out, but not lose any feel to the switches.

2mm o-rings feel perfect on my brown switches :)

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=35612.0

Recently I ordered these keycaps and o-rings from www.wasdkeyboards.com

They shipped promptly, and the keycaps are compatible with most standard cherry switch keyboards.  The CM Storm series use standard key-caps and are available by default on the WASD website.
60% keyboards, 100% of the time.

the QFP has non-standard modifiers (spacebar row keys) and hence requires the tsangan kit that has been available through various geekhack keyset groupbuys from signature plastics (SP). Your options are the red on black ragnarock set, CCnG, RA2.0, the current pink & white, and possibly others I am forgetting.  And you will also need the separate number-pad keys.

I think the QFP uses a non-standard 6x spacebar (I could be wrong) so you may be stuck with the original black spacebar, which you should consider when buying any keysets.

The SP groupbuy keysets are in high demand and occasionally pop up in the classifieds section but always sell very quickly.  Tsangan kits are in especially high demand right now due to the recent influx of custom Korean keyboards, and there is currently an interest check for getting more tsangan kits produced for the various sets mentioned above. Good luck!

I was looking for something more colorful for my keycaps. Although the O-Rings you mentioned seem perfect for my needs. Not sure if the 40A-R is a big jump in feel from the 40A-L though. However I'll go with the 40A-L anyways.

That's a bit unfortunate. So I'm going to need an 87 keycapt set for the "TKL" part of the keyboard and a separate keycap set for the numpad? If I'm interpreting that right that is. Just seems like a pain in the ass to even replace the keycap set now lol. Anyways I was looking at the pink and white one. Although I don't know the difference between double-shot and PBT quite frankly. So if I wanted the pink and white set I would need to buy the base set, tsangan kit, and the tenkeypad in order to replace my whole keycap set for my CM Storm QFP?

That is correct, but unfortunately I think you will be stuck with the black spacebar; I'm not sure where you could find a replacement 6x sized spacebar.

Double-shot keys are generally made out of ABS plastic, and consist of 2 pieces of different colored plastic molded together.  PBT caps are generally considered more wear-resistant, and legends are usually dye-sublimated onto the cap.  They are dififcult to double-shot because PBT plastic shrinks more than ABS when it cools.  Hopefully someday we'll get a wiki back up on geekhack and all of this info plus more detail should be readily available!

I think I can live with a black spacebar (I hope lol). A bit pricey but I want to have a more colorful keyboard. I got a bit sick of using my keycap set that came with my QFR.  People were definitely not kidding about keyboards emptying your wallet :D

What happened to Ripster anyways? I used to see him post a lot of stuff on this forums, but he and the wiki seem gone now. If it's something controversial I won't probe any further into it.

Yeah, that's why we affectionately call it wallethack!

Ripster was banished for causing some major problems for the site administrator(s).  In the aftermath, I think he requested that his wiki be removed from the site, although it had already been nuked by the r00tw0rm attack that brought the site down for some time (I believe they deleted/corrupted all of the pictures on the server, and ripster's guide relied heavily on his excellent photography).  C'est la vie!

Ah so that's what happened to both Ripster and the site. I wondered what happened to the site during the summer. I spent that time the site was down posting more often than I usually do on the TeamLiquid mech kb thread. I wonder if slytown is on this forums? Hm. Anyways thanks for all the help Binge and Chris!

Sorry for the OT, but another Wisconsin member! Welcome! You should come to the meetup (if we ever plan another)!

Well I'm actually from Minnesota. I just started my freshman year in college at UW-Madison. But I have no source of transportation other than my bike lol.

I think that the next one was hinted to be planned in Madison. Don't quote me on it though.
