Hey all,

I was curious if anyone can recommend a decent mouse or trackball with a 2 state DPI toggle ("fast" and "slow") for casual FPS gaming.

I've seen a few mice with 3 states (or more?), but I find that they're pretty difficult to use in gaming.

Unrelated, but I'll keep dreaming of modding my mouse with these buttons:

Hey, Ben!

What data you give actually screems for a (presumably oldschool) simple optical mouse. Optical mice tend to come with that type of settings (it's rarer to see the 1-1,000,000 dpi setting like in laser mice).

I can think of something like that, which was actually designed as a simple mouse for FPS gaming, according to the manufacturer. It's tt e-Sports Azurues:

http://www.ttesports.com/products/product.aspx?p=14&g=ftr

Only problem being its 1600 max dpi, which may in some cases be not enough for a large screen resolution user who prefers more of a high-sensitivity approach. But IMHO it should be okay in 1980*1050 (full HD). I've recently toned down my high dpis and found a gain in my mouse accuracy in doing so but this is obviously different in FPS, so you need to make sure it's enough for you.

Alternatively, and especially if you're a low-sensitivity player who can be satisfied with 1000 dpi or so, you may want to just go and paw all the office mice they have in a large shop until you find something nice (Logitech, A4tech or Microsoft or even a noname). But given the price of the Azurues, I'd probably go with it instead because it has everything a good office mouse should have and more.

The Logitech MX518 has three states as well and you don't have to install some crappy software in order to change it. Works under Linux as well. I've never come across a mouse with only two states.

Speaking of MX518, the A4tech X-748K (but you'd need to check the bottom of the mouse to see if it has the old optical sensor and not a new v-track superthin laser that supposedly isn't so good) has the same Avago 3060 sensor (minus any custom Logitech modifications) while having more of the ergonomics of a Razer Deathadder. It's also cheaper than the big names. I've had the mouse for 4 years and loved it. It's been through a lot with me. Was great for Mass Effect, the closest I've played to an FPS of late. Six dpi levels (all of which you can change to a different setting in the drivers) but easy to set and the colour coding is easy too.

For the record, the Azurues has the same sensor too.

Logitech G700 has either DPI scroll or switch so that you can set the number of profiles :) I have mine flicking between two profiles......

I'm currently using the Logitech G500. It has 3 DPI states, and I find myself switching between the highest and the middle setting. Pretty decent mouse, it does the job well.

The Logitech G500 mouse will also allow you to change it so you only have 2 modes between 200 DPI to 6400 DPI. If you save it as the default setting it will save it to the mouses memory so you can take it to another computer and it will keep those same settings.

To throw in a bit more...

There are 4 DPI settings on Savu: 400, 800, 1600 and 4000. You can enable any number of them. If you just enable 2 of them, and assign one button to the "DPI cycle" function, you can press that button and cycle between those 2 DPIs.

I'd vouch for the G500, too. Got mine at the beginning of the year and have really loved it.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

Another vote for the Roccat Savu. The number of options you have to set up this mouse are better than anything I've used to date, and everything is saved to the mouse, not the drivers.
