Help me choose a rodent (mouse)
« on: Mon, 03 December 2012, 10:25:48 »
Ok so firstly I went mouse hunting about 2 years ago now.

I have tried the following: Spawn, Abyssus, Death Adder, Lachesis, G400.

My mouse until this point had been the diamondback 3g I use a sort of palm/fingertip grip with a QCK mouse mat (could be the problem). I always keep my ring finger on the right click which is a bit odd and use around 1800-2400 dpi. I play mostly starcraft 2 and fps gamers and just look for comfort and ease really.

I eventually decided to get the next best thing an expensive but new copperhead and somehow I decided to buy a RAT 3.

So why I didn't stick with the other mice?

Firstly my hands are small at 3.8 inches wide(pinky to thumb) x 7~ inches high (palm to middle finger)

CM Storm Spawn: I really liked this mouse, really but it was just too wide and I couldn't adopt a claw grip. I loved the buttons and it felt really nice in all aspects apart from my hands hated it.
Razer abyssus: I didn't like the mouse clicks as much as I liked the spawn or death adder but it was decent I couldn't live without side buttons though and the scroll wheel is rubbish.
Death adder: simply put too big otherwise a really nice mouse
Lachesis: The mouse itself was actually quite comfortable but the Z-axis bug was just too annoying. I also found on the fly dpi a let down compared to the previous on the fly sensitivity seen on the diamondback 3g and copperhead.
G400: See death adder also buttons and scroll wheel were worse imo.

I use:

Razer Copperhead: Firstly the buttons are worse to press than the spawn but nicer than the g400 (why this feature rarely shows in reviews is beyond me). It took some getting used to but overall I really like the diamondback esque shape.
RAT 3: Near perfection to be honest, the shape took a bit of getting used to and the side buttons aren't great but they are functional enough. At first I didn't like the braided cord but I don't mind it now.

Why I am searching for another mouse? Both of these mice are decent but I feel disconnected to the screen whenever I use them this is likely because both of them are lazer mice (3200dpi version of rat 3).

The choices at hand:Kinzu v2, Abyssus, Kana, Sensei Raw and Razer Taipan. This is the order in terms of price. I would prefer to not go with the Taipan or a better mouse surface.

Kinzu V2: I'm weary of the sensor I tend to use high dpi ~1800 and I think the TTC switches well I am not sold on that.
Abyssus: I am considering this, I have other mice which I can use for everyday browsing so it's not much of a problem.
Kana: Same issues as the kinzu but it seems to be a perfect shape, shame about the TTC switches.
Sensei Raw: I worry a little that it might be a bit wide (although the lachesis is wider than the deathadder and I liked that). Skeptical of lazer sensor.
Taipan: I don't like how easily razer products break or the synapse software idea but it seems to be close to the diamondback Lachesis however it is very expensive.

Alternatively perhaps my current mice could benefit from a different surface? Options are a tad limited to what is available in south africa.

Thanks any ideas would be great :).

So you prefer optical mice?  Ironically it's the reverse for me, I feel I can get the best settings from laser mice.

But in that case, you can rule out Sensei Raw and Taipan because both are laser mice.  They are also both too big (will be in Deathadder category).

At the moment Kana sounds like the best choice too bad their TTC switch and mouse feet sux.  Though I know some people don't mind that but I'd get cheap replacement mouse feet at least.

Another option is get Kinzu V2 Pro Edition, that one has proper teflon mouse feet and omron switches.

However Abyssus probably has better sensor than both, but I didn't like the ergonomic (or lack of) on Abyssus too much.

Like stonejoint said you kind of have to try it out to know what you want.  But it shouldn't be too bad for you because if you focus on small optical mouse, there is probably only like 3-4 mice out on the market in that category.

Thanks for the reply. These are older laser sensors that im using though (not too bad though).

Also the Taipan (124 mm (Length) x 63 mm (Width) x 36 mm (Height)) is very similar in size to the copperhead and diamondback (129 x 63 (66 for the copperhead) x 38.5mm). The steelseries sensei is 125 x 68 x 39 mm which is why I am considering it. Yes im not fond of my current laser sensors but at the price point the raw sensei is pretty good.

Edit: Ordered an abyssus hopefully I get a good one.
