How can you untwist braided cables?
« on: Wed, 10 October 2012, 00:06:29 »
On both my mouse and headset (both featuring braided cables of course) the cable starts to get all twisted and funky and I can never undo it. Is there some sort of process that'll eliminate these tangles and make it straight? Or is it just something I'll have to live with?

Counter-Torque the cable.  What I mean is that try to rotate the cable clockwise or counter clockwise and see if it untwist itself.

Might have to do it small section at a time but eventually you'll see the cable flatten itself.  Kind of hard to explain without pictures but I'm at work now so yeah.....

I have a Logitech G5 mouse that did the same thing. I tried to twist the wire as Hyde suggested and it worked for a while but then it went back to being tangled and knoted. After it went back I just cut the braid with scissors where it was stuck to allow the wire to move freely but it looked awful and I just ended up taking the whole mouse apart and resleeving it. It's so much better now.

I don't know why mice manufacturers advertise braided cables so much. It's a ****ing awful feature and it provides nothing.

Yea I would say make a new cable. The cable will just go back to its original state. I think there is a term associated with that, but I can't remember maybe cable memory or something.
