Matias Quiet Pro vs Tactile Pro
« on: Wed, 19 December 2012, 14:33:40 »
To anyone who has tried both the Matias Quiet Pro and the Tactile Pro (3), how similar do they feel? I'm looking into getting the Quiet Pro, but my local shop only had the Tactile Pro in stock for me to try out. I really liked the feel of the Tactile Pro that I tried, so is the Quiet Pro much different?

Also, this is kind of a long shot but does anyone have force graphs for the Matias switches? I've seen some force graphs for various ALPS switches, but I don't know how much different the Matias ones are.

they feel the same.  Quiet pro is just less loud and bottoming out is a bit less firm.

matias switches are about 75 cn
60% keyboards, 100% of the time.

lol omg I was wondering about the same thing this morning.  Good job nsrexler for making this post before me  :D

But yeah I ran into the same dilemma where I'm thinking to get my uncle a gift.  He use to work at Apple way back in the days in Taiwan.  So I'm guessing he might've used the Apple Extended Keyboard II at some point and now I'm debating if I should get him Tactile Pro or Quiet Pro.

Tactile Pro might be closer to what he's used to but since this keyboard is for his home so I wonder if his wife would kill me if I get him the Tactile Pro.  So would you say the feel is pretty close?  In that case is it safe to say Quiet Pro should be the "safer" choice?

Also since I know they use rubber to dampen the up and down stroke a bit, I was worried that it might feel like using o-rings.  And I kind of dislike o-rings  :(

I hope Quiet Pro is nothing like using o-rings.

A bit of a tangent, but how does it compare to the Apple Extended II? I haven't used either a Quiet Pro or a Tactile Pro, but am considering a Quiet Pro for work; the Unicomp I use at home might be just a little loud :)

When is Tactile Pro 4 coming out?  I only see Tactile Pro 3 on their website.

Apple Extended Keyboard II

Sounds like this is kinda between Tactile Pro and Quiet Pro based on the YouTube clips I find.  Though I kind of like how Apple Extended Keyboard II has a deeper and more weighted clack.

Oddly enough, there is only like one clip I've heard that sounded like what I remember it sounding like...

Not sure if it is because the keyboards have gotten older...Or it is where they're recording it from or just my ears are older...

Well typically most YouTube users just record with whatever (cellphone, digital camera... etc).  And chances are it doesn't have a sound accurate mic but I guess it still give us a rough idea I guess  :P

That's a (rather rare) Apple Extended, not an Extended II. Never used one, but I understand it's a bit different to the II.

The MQP is inspired by the AEKII which also used the same switches as the SGI AT101. But the AEKII had a very big and sturdy "old school" case, which IMO would affect the acoustics for the better.

However, we are talking about quiet (fully dampened on the downstroke and upstroke) switches here. The acoustics overall are just less.

I've kept a sharp eye on reviews of these keyboards and would surmise that the main difference between MQP and the others is that the MQP has a lighter feel. I'd consider that a plus, but I won't know until I have a board using those switches (hopefully will be addressed in January :) ).

I'm not sure how directly this will answer your question or if you've already made up your mind, but I hope it helps.

I used the Apple Extended Keyboard II back in the '90s, and was thrilled when Matias came out with the original Tactile Pro (Tactile Pro 1?) back around 2003 or so. I then discovered how much louder it was than my AEK II. I kept it hoping I would adjust, but I never did. It sat unused. In the interest of full disclosure it should be noted that I have NO experience with its subsequent revisions (Tactile Pro 2/3/4) so I can't say if the newer ones would have been more to my liking.

I can tell you two things:

1. Had the QuietPro existed back then, I would have bought it in a heartbeat, and I intend to buy one as soon as I can.
2. Though I was not a fan of the original Tactile Pro's sound compared to my AEK II, I was (and am still today) a huge fan of the build quality, and the feel of the keys. In those respects, it soundly trounced any keyboard Apple has released this century. In my opinion, the gap has widened (in Matias' favor) with each new keyboard Apple has released.

While I have no hands-on experience with the Quiet Pro (yet), I would say with zero hesitation, if you want a keyboard that comes closest to the AEK II, get a QuietPro. That's what I intend to do, and I won't look back.

My experience with the Quiet Pro was the exact opposite of Mr. Interface: In his review he thought the SGI was stiffer than the QP - while I feel the opposite - the SGI feels noticeably lighter than the QP.

I swear Alps are like a box of chocolates...
That may be more to the variability of the old ALPS than anything else. The (claimed) tolerances for the Matias switches are much more precise than just about any keyboard switch out there.

I believe this is the new TP4.  I'd double check though.

Ok I e-mailed them and they got back to me to confirmed that this is indeed Tactile Pro 4  :)

I wonder why matias.ca still references only the TP3? I saw a video on YouTube that claimed to be the TP4, and I thought it was a hoax for that reason.

Yeah me too, but I guess it's probably the real deal now that I got a response from Matias.  Though I wonder what the difference is between Tactile Pro 3 and Tactile Pro 4.

Just an update: I ended up getting the Quiet Pro, and I received it in the mail today. I am very satisfied with it. I haven't used an AEKII in many years so I can't compare it to that, but the feel compares very favorably to my beloved Model M, though of course much quieter. Great job, Matias!

The Model M definitely has a better feel and a much sharper tactile point, but the Quiet Pro comes impressively close in my opinion. Combined with the quietness and modern features like 6-key rollover, I think this is going to become my main keyboard for daily use.

lol awesome that's my biggest concern before also.  Like model m seems very fun to use but I wonder if I can stand it on a daily basis.  On the contrary quiet pro just feel more realistic in terms of using it as a daily driver.

Oh and I heard Tactile Pro 4 now has 10 key rollover.  Not sure if it's the same for Quiet Pro.

I'm not sure about the rollover thing. Some places have said 6-key, others say 10-key. All I know is that it's handled every key combination I've thrown at it, so it's good enough for me.

Oh and if you're on the fence about the Model M, just go for it. It's the very most satisfying keyboard to type on, in my opinion. It's pretty loud but it's totally worth it if you do a lot of typing.
