Keyboard (or half-keyboard) for gaming?
« on: Wed, 30 January 2013, 16:08:37 »
I'm wondering if anything exists that suits my needs.  I spend a lot (too much) time playing various MMOs, lately it's World of Warcraft.  Depending what I'm doing, there's often a need for a large number of key bindings, particularly in player vs. player.

The most natural way for me to play is to use my left hand for keypresses, and my right hand for the mouse.  This gives me access to about half the keyboard, so I bind pretty much everything on the left side of the board.  I find that's not enough keys, so I also bind ALT-keys, SHIFT-keys and CTRL-keys to get more bindings.

The problem with this is, the most natural digit for me to use for pressing these modifiers (alt, shift, ctrl) is my thumb.  Using my pinky to reach for CTRL and SHIFT but my thumb for ALT is clumsy.  On top of that, the ALT key is too far to the left to be comfortable while I've got my fingers in the home position.

What I think would be ideal is to shrink the space bar (and put it on the right side of the keyboard), and putting the three modifier keys in the vacant space.  This allows me to use my thumb for all the modifiers without having to fold it under my hand.  I use an MS split ergonomic 4000 (I know, it's not mechanical - give me a mechanical ergo keyboard please :) ).

I've looked at the Kinesis, and it is tempting - the thumb keys look pretty good.  I'm not sure there are enough keys though.  The Maltron 3d looks like it might be more suitable, but the price tag makes me want to be able to try it out before shelling out the cash.

If anyone is familiar with the Nostromo n52, something like that would be about the right form-factor if it had thumb modifier keys rather than the joystick crap they attach to it.

Does anything like this exist, or has anyone done something custom like what I'm looking for?

Hey, I'm not really familiar with a programmable keypad since I've never used one myself, but it might fit your needs. I found a few threads that can help you start your hunt into these pads. In this thread there's a discussion about "decent keypads". Lysol, the Cherry keyboard encyclopedia, recommends a Genovation keypad since it is programmable.

If you decide that you want something that's more like the Nostromo, you can check out this thread which has a discussion about the Razer Orbweaver. Which is a similar product.

Good luck with your hunt! And make sure to let us know what you find/take pictures. I like pictures  ;D

This may be a silly question, but you didn't mention anything about it, so I'm wondering if you've considered the Logitech G600 or Razer Naga mice?

Or a Tipro or Access-IS board.

I've tried the naga, and didn't like it.  Partially because only the first couple rows of buttons are comfortable for thumb access (anything further back is too contorting), but also because it doesn't feel right.  The mouse-hand is for mousing, targeting and camera-moving.  :)

The mice only provide a small number of buttons as well, so I'd still want modifier-keys to be easily accessible even if the mouse buttons were comfortable.

I have experimented with using the side-buttons on my current mouse (a Logitech G500) as modifier keys.  This works, but has the same 'doesn't feel right' problem - I want all the key-action to be on the same hand.

The Genovation 682 looks interesting, but http://www.genovation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2372&sid=02e515c1d879bfad020ff345c8997e04 makes me think it's not NKRO (or more than 3kro), which isn't sufficient for what I want.

That's what else I was trying to think of: a Tipro!

Half an Ergo dox may work also... though you just missed the GB.

I would suggest 7x5 keys (or larger if needed) programmable pad like genovation or Access-is also. You can program macro combos in hardware.

The ergodox looks awesome, wish I could still get in on the group buy!

I've decided to try out the orbweaver, if I can get used to using the thumbpad as a modifier that should do the trick.  Otherwise I'll be hunting down one of the keypads, maybe a custom job or maybe not.
