Recently I have been trying to decide whether to go with a Realforce or HHKB, I have heard a lot of people say that the HHKB is better, but plenty of people say that Realforce is better. I am a High School student and I spend the majority of my time playing games, but I also take a computer programming class (Kinda worthless we don't learn much) and I think I want to do programming in College. Would my best bet be going with the Realforce since it has the arrow keys? Or should I go with the HHKB because many people say it just feels better? If only I could just feel both of them and choose.. :( Thanks

The HHKB has arrow keys, you just have to hold down the fn button with your pinky, no problem at all.

buy some pot or something with that money. get in trouble while you still can... don't worry about keyboards in high school.

Wth, sth. Kid's getting a jump on doing something right for his future, cut him a break.

@Chase5Delta: It honestly depends on whether having a standard layout is more important to you than a small form factor.

oh yeah getting into spending ludicrous amounts of money on keyboards at an early age is doing something right... i must have forgotten all the thousands of dollars i've wasted on this 'hobby' of mine :P

being a square in high school is the worst time to be a square

I guess I have a skewed perspective. I didn't do much pot in HS, and by the time I was done I had spent thousands of dollars on guitar and drum equipment, which ultimately wasn't a waste as I've made a decent amount with music so far.

"Being a square" never really mattered to me. The vast majority of kids at my school were complete **** ups anyways, and I never really wanted to be accepted by them anyways, so I just did my own thing. That's pretty much where I'm coming from, so more power to the OP.

same here actually (though i never had thousands to spend on my music gear... thank you handmedowns) and i regret not getting in more trouble while i had the chance.

Apparently liking Keyboards and doing pot can't coexist? Lol, I don't smoke pot, but I am not a "square" by any means. I go out with friends all the time, I just also like playing computer games and thing Mechanical Keyboards are awesome :D nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

What's wrong with spending money on keyboards at a young age? :P

Nothing in my opinion, this sth guy seems fairly immature if you ask me... What kind of person gives "advice" to a teenager to go blow all his money on pot? Sounds pretty idiotic.

I don't get what you are trying to say, maybe people where you live don't say "doing pot" but maybe people say that where I live? For an "Adult" you don't seem very grown up...

Nothing wrong with being a square in high school.  What's wrong is ragging on high school kids when you're a full grown adult.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

These are beautiful :O I wonder how much it would cost to get a set up like that, with white on the edges and black keys in the middle. Not to mention however much the click clack would cost.

There's a difference between "growing up" and being responsible for your own damn actions. Pot is illegal in most states. Even if it was legal, drugs are not something you want to dabble with. I'm sure you were joking, but sheesh dude.
(I'm a high school student, BTW.)

I don't have any experience with the HHKB or Realforce, but go with the layout that you think will work best. I can't imagine gaming on a HHKB, but maybe it can be done successfully...

I just bought a HHKB with the intention of making it my gaming board as I wait for an MX-Mini, we'll see how it goes...

About 300 per HHKB, and roughly 80 per CC.

If you know the risks of that kind of stuff, then it is your life. Just count me out of that ****.

@L4yercake congrats on your HHKB! Be sure to tell us how that works for your gaming, I'm interested to know.

AND type on wonderful keyboards.

Your age has nothing to do with your desire for better PC peripherals. Neither does your level of maturity ;D

Edit;
Oh yeah and to the OP - Having them both I recommend you try the realforce first. I feel like the layout PLUS the different switch type may throw you off of your first Topre experience
i type, therefore i geekhack

Alright, thanks for the tips, the HHKB just looks better than the Realforce in my opinion, but switching to a totally different layout might be weird.

It is a tough decision for sure.  They feel similar but different...The HHKB's main attraction is the form factor.  It is small, convenient and easy to transport if you need to.  It feels great but if you want something like dedicated arrow keys, it IS a bit of a pain.  Also, while the backspace position is superior, it will be different from other keyboards...not sure if that matters to you or not.  The ctrl key position is better as well.

RF is basically a standard layout.  Some people prefer the feel of the RF but more seem to prefer the HHKB.  It has all the advantages/disadvantages of a TKL/Full size vs. 60%.

If you use the arrow keys a lot, I'd probably go RF.  You DO get used to using the arrow keys (they're designed so you move your right hand to the FN key and it puts the arrow keys in easy position for your index and middle finger) but if you use them a lot I'm not sure I'd go with the HHKB..

I use the arrow keys all the time on my hhkb and I don't find it to be an issue whatsoever. I do understand how others might prefer dedicated arrow keys though ...

Really enjoying the Realforce myself, but haven't tried the HHKB and am sure I would like that too.  The more important thing to me is the keys themselves, not really the layout, so you can't go wrong.  I do recommend that before you decide on programming for college make sure you actually attempt to learn it beforehand and see what it involves, it is not for everyone, and while I love it, the number of people I see drop out of the major because of their misconceived notions of what programming entails is rather astonishing (i.e. playing games and wanting to code them are completely different things, so make sure you know WHY you think programming is what you want to do).  Not turning you off of coding, mind you, it is awesome, just know what you are getting into and don't waste time in college in a major you won't want to do.

Also, this forum needs to lighten up, those that say "if you know the risks of that kind of stuff, go ahead and screw yourself up" don't actually know the risks and are ignorant (and who wants to be ignorant?).  Believing all the propaganda in this world is the real sign of immaturity (for instance, go look up when pot became illegal and the real reason it happened, and then look up all of the things you believe are true about pot ..."It causes cancer, kills brain cells, causes infertility, gives you boobs, makes you lazy, blah blah blah"...that were said in the 40's or 50's and have all been proven false).  In other words, figure out WHY you think something is true BEFORE you think it is true.  I can tell ya, smoking a nice bowl and coding is some real fun and an experience unlike most others, and doing it when you are young is the true time TO do it, because hey, it is illegal, but they care a lot less when you are a minor.  I see it as good advice STH gave you, lighten up and enjoy your childhood, and if that doesn't involve pot so be it, but don't go throwing around "immature" and other rude words that really don't apply, it just reeks of ignorance (and again, who wants to be ignorant?). ;)

Removed for being a rude about it, I just have a sore spot when it comes to the ganja because with my disease it is one of the few things that help me, yet people STILL try to judge me for it.  Didn't mean to be a ****!  And I definitely agree with you daerid, kids are quite the little sponges, gotta make sure they can handle moderation before teaching them to roll their first J. :D

Eventually I'mma get a Realforce, cuz I don't want to deal with re-learning the positions of the symbols on the keyboard. Don't do enough programming to warrant it.

Yeeee pot. Drugs, in moderation, are not a bad thing. Too many squares up in this *****.

I haven't smoked in like 15 years. Gonna wait till the kid is a little older, then prolly get blitzed w/ the mrs. when he's over at the grandparents. As cool as I am with it, it's still something I don't want around my son until he's old enough to be responsible about it.

Since you already have a filco, I would go with HHKB to try a different layout.
