Steelseries 6Gv2 issues
« on: Wed, 30 January 2013, 12:58:10 »
Hi!

Sorry, but this is going to be sort of a story. I wish I could have read this forum a year ago. Oh well. I have not found any post regarding a problem like this (mybe one post on TeamLiquid forums) so I will post it for future reference and maybe get some advice.
Anyway I purchased last year a Steelseries 6Gv2 with Cherry MX Black switches. It has been functioning perfectly for quite a few months. I was very happy sinnce it was a huge jump up from the cheap rubber dome trash keyboards I used to have, and it was still a pretty expensive keyboard in my eyes as a student in Europe (I had to pay roughly $110 for it here). I had to adjust to the force requirement at first so it was weird for a month, but after that it was awesome.

One thing I disliked from the start was that the keys got dirty in a month and they would obscure the paint on the keys so it was sometimes hard to see in dim light, also this couuld only be cleaned off if I washed the keycaps with water or soap(of couurse I took them off the switches first).

So after half a year I started having issues during the summer. Weird issues when the computer would randomly register multiple keypresses even when I clearly pressed the key only once. It was annoying to say the least, to start typing then after a line notice that you had 2-3 spaces in between some words, then go back and delete the extras. Fortunately it was only happening with the spacebar then. Annoying but bearable.
Forward the time until november 2012 and now this has spread. I have multiple keys that produce this error, I made the observation that the keys I am likely using the most, so vowel letter keys,[comma],[dot],[backspace],[delete],[left and right arrow keys](because of the constant error correcting I have been doing for 3 months).

Now it has reacheed the point of total frustration. I write a line with the keyboard and I have to spend twice as much time correcting it. Most of the words have double or triple characters in them. When I try going back to correct the errors, the left-right arrows somtime jump 3-4 characters at a time, the delete annd backspace key instantly deletes 4-5 character, so I have to retype them, then it types double characters again. I am going quite mad. It does not help that I am currently trying to write my thesis with this. (I know I should have stopped using this crap a long time ago, but my pride and joy, my first mechanical keyboard, made me see past its "little" flaws)

Here is what an average typed sentence roughly looks like if I don't go back and edit it:

Todaaay  after work  I waaas thiinkinnng  of going  to a  baar annnd  havinng a few drinks   with  thhe boys.

It is goddamn annoying. First I thought Windows went retarded somehow so I checked the keyboard settings for "Repeat delay", now it is on the lowest Long setting, I have to press a key for 2-3 seconds to get it to continually register, but the problem remains. I thought then maybe something got in there, so I cleaned every bit of it, cleand the caps, cleaned the plastic, bruched clean the board, used compressed air to get dust out from every crook. No change. None. It is just getting progressively worse.

I am not a soldering tinkering wizard so I can't solder off and take apart switches, I don't even know how would I fix them if i did. Maybe someone encountered something like this? I have no idea what would cause this. Multiple switches going bad maybe? Why? I am not hitting the board like the angry german kid I can assure you. I also never poured liquid on the keyboard, ate above the keyboard, sprinkle anythhing in the keyboard or any weird whatever like that.

Also I am pretty mad at Steelseries and at myself for believing the "50 million keypresses" and etc. etc. hype and not researching the market more and not getting suspicious about the 1 year warranty. Of course it has run out now, couple of months ago actually. But even if I had a warranty I don't know if I'd want another Steelseries keyboard.

So that aside I also would like to ask if you know a good online store close to Europe or with a good low shipping fee where I can buy a Filco Majestouch 2 with brown switches. It is definately going to be expensive for me but from the reviews I read say it is well worth it and frankly after this I just want a solid keyboard which will not fail me for quite some time and I can type on and game adequately. I don't want any more disappointments because I was going for a more affordable one. So if anybody has some information regarding these feel free to share them, it would help me out immensely. Sorry for the long story and thank you.

If you're still on a budget, I would recommend trying to get a CMStorm QuickFire Rapid. Same OEM as Filco, but half the price.

I literally had the EXACT same problem with my first steelseries 7G.

It was infuriating to say the least. I put the keyboard in the attic after 5 months of use untill ONE day before the 2 year warranty (Australia has 2 year warranties for EVERYTHING) ran out and I sent it back to the shop and they gave me a brand new replacement (which I am typing on now).

The solution in your case might be to switch out the problematic switches. I have accepted that now as mine is out of warranty, i will eventually have to do the same (so for now i am treating the keyboard with kid gloves so to speak).

I GENUINELY understand your frustration and i was furious with steelseries at first for both the ****TY keycaps and this problem, but I couldnt have know it when i got the keyboard...

as the 7g has the best wrist rest in the world and it makes typing sooo comfortable i might put up with my gripes untill it becomes too much hehe.

in the mean time I am ordering PBT caps wioth no printing which will fix the ****ty keycaps problem....

you could always try replacing the switch INTERNALS without taking the switch off, there are many videos on how to do this.

I REALLY want to know if switching the key fixes the problem so please let me know mate!
7G owner :)

PS: I'm looking for a PBT blank full set for my 7G!

Well, i bought the exact same keyboard. So far i haven't noticed any problems. Sadly i haven't read any related posts regarding this keyboard.
There are a couple of things i like like the red switches and the bigger Enter key. I am not sure why most keyboard have only a small enter key now but i think like this its just better.

Returning to the topic, i should expect problems down the line but i wonder why the switches would fail. Are they not all the same? So far my worst experience had to be Rosewill.

You could have a QuickFire Rapid. I live next to you and sometimes there are marketing campaigns that drive the price to ~90$, equivalent.

Also, if you afford some experiment, you should open your SS keyboard and maybe replace the electrolytic caps. It is worth a test.
