Devlin keyboards - Cherry DS keycap possibility?
« on: Mon, 18 March 2013, 09:46:00 »
I've read some posts about the heavier DS keycaps made by Devlin.  Anyone know if the Devlin MRE-1523-001 keyboards use Cherry switches?

These are described by the Ebay seller as "Alphameric MRI 1523-001 Rugged Military keyboard.  Now known as Devlin MRI-1523-001."  Asking $75 apiece, which is on the high side for just a set of keycaps, but may be open to offers.

"Cortron?"  <.<  Never heard of these...  How are they to type on?

"Switches: Full-Travel (0.15 inch) 100 million cycles"  <-- http://www.armedforces-int.com/article/cortron-model-84-series.html

Sounds pretty beefy!

Probably one of the best switch. They are magnetic pulse, the signal is released by a change in the magnetic field, not capacitance like in the capacitive switches.
So, they last long, for there is no mechanical contact, being rated >100 millions cycles, full travel around 4mm. Pretty light, around 50 g, probably less, nice to type on. It depends on the sleeve. Mine came with rubber sleeves, but I replaced them with springs.
HaaTa knows more about them. I have two Devlin keyboards with them.
From the comment you found, it seems to be Cortron.

Gotta love the descriptive text on the company website:

"The Model 121 Series is virtually impervious to contaminants found in the harshest applications, both indoors and in the field. It's Ruggedized/Militarized design withstands the rigors of even the most hostile and demanding industrial and military environments. Vital electronics and switch bearing surfaces are sealed for long-term protection against water, beverages, dust, dirt, and many chemicals. Sugar based beverages can be left to dry without causing damage to components."

Heh!

Might make an offer on one of these, they do look massively robust.  I'm guessing that they can be made to work with a Microsoft PC?  Looks like a relatively standard connector, maybe a DB-9.
