Hi! Average College Student here!
« on: Tue, 26 March 2013, 01:07:42 »
Hi guys! I'm Spectrum. I go to college and play SC2 and on the search for a decent keyboard since I'm taking it to the next level (high masters) I bought a Ducky Shine II TKL. I'm 20, live in the U.S. and I'm studying Business Administration. It's a pleasure to be here, considering looking at all these keyboards/keycaps is like gamer porn to me. :D I switched from a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013 to a Ducky Shine II TKL, mostly because of the lack of space on my desk so it slid no matter how I put it.

Now, I'm interested in changing the PCB(the BW was green, I was thinking somewhat Purple or Red[it has red LEDs]) and I also wanted to change the case on it, however I have no clue how to do any of this, and whether or not I'm going to have to desolder and resolder the switches on it. I've never soldered so I'm also new at that, but I also do not comprehend the composition of the keyboard at all. Is anyone kind of enough to point me in the right direction to acquiring what I want?

I also have another thread started http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41675.0 where I would like someone to point me towards a nice set of keycaps for it as well. I liked the RA set (White on Red) a lot, and I'm looking for something similar, maybe not colorwise but the same concept.

I apologize for the lengthy introduction but appreciate your time! :)

Not sure if pure is plate mounted or pbc mounted... but either way you will have to desolder each switch. You will also need an aluminum anodized plate that fits. If you can make the layout or find one online, you could send it in for it to be made. Google: anodized aluminum.  Or something along those lines.
If there is a group buy (bulk buy), the price will be around $30 for each plate. I am not sure if we had a gb for a pure plate yet. I forgot if it was a 60% keyboard or 75% . If it is 60 then a poker plate may work. We are having a gb for the gh60 right now and that includes a plate not sure if they will be anodized.

First, changing the PCB isn't going to be something you can do so easily. There aren't just PCBs floating around in different colors.

Second, if you're looking for a plate for the Pure, which is PCB mounted, you can buy one from the GH60 group buy going on right now. They won't be anodized, as they are stainless steel. You would be able to paint it a color of your choosing.

I have a Ducky Shine II TKL, if that answers the 60/75 % question. :)

60% would be like a Poker/Pure/GH60. 75% would be like a Race/MX Mini. A TKL is generally just that, TKL.

If you're looking to change the color of your plate, there are a couple things you could do. One is to desolder all of the LEDs and switches, paint or powder coat the plate (as I'm certain it's steel), and the solder everything back together. The next thing would be to keep an eye on MiMiC's webstore (he has a vendor subforum). He mentioned offering custom vinyl stickers for plates in various colors.

I'm assuming the vinyl sticker would be ten times easier because I wouldn't have to go through the soldering process, correct? I'll keep an eye, thanks for all the help!
