Long story short(er), my
KinzuXai mod started dying (scroll encoder hole is loose!).
Rather than fixing it, I thought I'd try out some
other mice.I was leaning towards the Razer Abyssus as it's almost the same size as the Salmosa, however it's quite bulbous when compared to the Salmosa.
I saw it mentioned on geekhack that the Abyssus' bottom shell is exactly the same as the Salmosa's!
So I grabbed my old Salmosa, cleaned/peeled off the remaining rubber coating, and stuck it onto the Abyssus internals. Unfortunately the Salmosa's top shell was
very glossy.
The glossy finish meant that my palm was constantly sticking to the rump of the mouse. I tried to scuff the surface with a scourer sponge but this just left it feeling matte with no grip.
Solution: cover the surface with rubber!
Simply cut out a patch of rubber and stretch it over the surface. There's some pegs on the inside of the shell that will allow the rubber to hook over it.
I used a multi-purpose (slightly textured) rubber glove. The material should be a little thick as this will allow it to stretch evenly and there's less chance of it suddenly tearing.
The next step is very important - find suitable keycaps to match the rubber colour :3
I then started to wonder if it could be applied to the tiny Salmosa AE!
Cover the base with a few strips of double-sided tape.
Not only does it keep the rubber in place, but it allows you to easily cut holes (for the lens/switches) without tearing it.
Line the inside of the shell with some more double-sided tape and stretch the rubber into place.
Pop the internals back in!
Use a scalpel to poke two tiny holes for the screws. Then add your favourite glides (I love Corepadz' Kinzu feet, they provide great area cover.
The finished Salmosa AE - now with extra grippy-ness!
Does anyone have any other ideas for applying extra grip?
