I LOVE my G9x to death (Especially the grip shell, I can't live without it). And I recently upgraded from a cheap plastic Chinese made mouse pad to a Goliathus Control edition (The smallest version).

I do not regret anything at all, it's probably the best 15$ you can spend on your setup, but...
The mouse pad is a bit too small for me, even though I use ~1850 DPI, I still want a big mouse pad, it's just more comfortable. But there's an another reason. All those complaints about G9x acceleration (I think) and cloth mouse pads, that you should use a hard mouse pad for a G9x...

-----Useless stuff ^ , skip to here if you want to go straight to my question-----

So hard mouse pad over cloth for a G9x? If so, which mouse pad would you recommend? Something from newegg, or amazon. My max would probably be like 30$ (I feel guilty for spending more for a mouse pad, unless it's really amazing  :D ) As for the design, I would like something plain,  Hopefully black, white, grey. No major branding or some designs (Atleast razers logo is good). Hopefully I explained everything clear, lol.

EDIT: I posted in the wrong forums didn't I... Ahh cows....
EDIT: Tyvm for the Mod for moving the topic.

If you want something big then cloth is the easiest alternative, I've used a QcK Heavy with my G9x with no issue, but if you really need to know that you're getting as little hw accel as possible then you'll want a hard pad. I can't really think of all that many large hard pads, I'd probably look towards the SS 9HD or the Goliathus Speed extended pad.

I have a Steel Series that is black glass, I think, and it is really nice. I have had it for years and it looks brand new.

Otherwise, if you have a dead monitor, take it apart. There is a clear hard plastic layer in there with lines etched or somehow embossed on it.

That really makes a great mouse pad, if just a little thick and not too pretty on its own. However, you can put a photo on the underside, face-up, and have a nice custom! I sanded the edges slightly and my son has used it for a couple of years.

Also, I have a thin black pebbled sheet that was (if I remember) a stiffener in the bottom of a fabric shopping bag, or tote bag, years ago. I cleaned it up and it makes a very good pad (using it now for my left mouse) but you have to tape it down to the desk to keep it from sliding. Just the right texture and very thin.

I also have the glass SS mat, which I love, but I think it might be a bit small for OP.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be thinking, if I should get a new one or not. If anybody has any suggestions for a mouse pad, it would be appreciated.

I recently picked up several artisan mousepads from Japan. Love the shiden more than any pad I've used. And my roommate who said he never needed a mousepad started using one after I showed him these.

While I haven't had a chance to try Artisan pads myself yet, from what I've heard they are worth going over OPs $30 limit, although there have been complaints that some of them wear out quick, so you might want to do a bit of research first.

I was looking into the scarab earlier, it looks pretty nice, the glide is amazing, even thought I don't really like razer myself... I bet there's better options and such, but can anybody explain me what kind of mouse pad surface is for FPS for an example, I heard you use a glide-ish one, but from the first impression it looks like it would be impossible to use.

I use the same mouse and I recently got the Goliathus extended. I sent it back because I found it dragged a little too much for me due the the design printed on it. The pad I've been using and will continue to use is a generic xl black pad I picked up from office depot what never seems to create any drag on my g9x. It cost me less than $10 I think.

There is no best surface for specific game genres, it's all down to what you prefer. However, high sens players will often prefer hard pads whereas low sens players seem to prefer cloth pads as that gives them more control, but in the end it comes down to what works best for you.

Yeah probably didn't explain it well. I didn't mean to compare hard and cloth, I meant to compare the surfaces. For an example, I got a goliathus control edition, but there's a speed edition too. It seems weird cause I heard people prefer the "speed" a.k.a glide edition for FPS gaming, which is weird since you need precision for FPS games.

+1 for Razer Scarab. I have used it with numerous mice and it tracks well with both optical and laser sensors. Not only that, it is durable, easy to clean, and the feel is amazing. The only downside is that they are a little bit expensive.

Call me crazy, but I'm actually a fan of the Razer Vespula.  The wristrest is awesome for games, and the two sides, one rough and one smooth, are both expertly made.  Plus, I got mine for like 15 bucks new, and I honestly still can't decide which side I like better!  You really can't go wrong with that thing.  Plus, if you're the kind of person who likes to give in to the hype, the grain of the mousepad is supposedly specifically calibrated in hexagonal zig-zags to give your mouse the most feedback.  And to be dead honest, I believe it.  I love that thing.

imo with the current exchange rate and shipping price drop artisan pads are offered at a reasonable price directly from their website. it took them 3 working days to ship my order from tokyo to germany and i paid around 35 euros including shipping.
it would have easily been twice as much if i had ordered via their european resellers (some uk based, heavily overpriced and non supportive crap company)

i have favored the puretrak talent over my previous artisan pads (hien, hayabusa) but since i have used the hayate for a longer period now i think it may be the best pad for me right now. but of course this is comes down to personal preference like almost nothing else in the peripherals sector.

For the OP

I'm currently using one of these, it feels rough but my G700 glides smoothly.

http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Professional-Gaming-Mouse-Black/dp/B002J9G5AE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366485741&sr=8-2&keywords=steelseries

I paid $100 for 4 shipped. Haven't heard of wear issues myself. Nor noticed any over three pads used by 3 people daily for a month or so in my household.

Just curious if you have a link to where these could be purchased? I'm always looking for a better mouse pad.

Also I found this but it seems a little cheap, not sure if its the correct one being discussed or not.

don't let their obvious usage of google translator while creating this "english" version of their page deter you. payment via paypal is possible even if it says credit card only sometime during the order process.

The Razer Manticor aluminum pad has a wonderful glide, smooth and neutral...speedy but not slippery. Very easy to clean, too.

I've tried dozens of surfaces (including all that have been mentioned), and I think it's perfect.

Always wanted to try out an Artisan mousepad, but their extensive product lineup was overwhelming with a plethora of options.
Just came across an awesome review from tubbby, an Overclock member:

He review is in pdf format and provides an excellent breakdown on the various Artisan mousepads.
Think I can finally pinpoint one or two models to try out.

Personally I like big mouse pads and prefer cloth due to my low sensitvity. So I use a Steelseries Qck Heavy. However, the G9X uses the Avago 9500 sensor which has some known issues (acceleration) on cloth, so you may instead want to go for a decent size hard pad like the Razer scarab/destructor/destructor2 or something similar. Still though, can't say I have ever used a hard pad that I truly liked.

The problems manifest themselves when doing fast long sweeps, typically if you play on low sensitivity. Also, it is just acceleration, which unlike skipping for example, not everyone may pick up on. You could be playing a genre where it hardly matters. Personally I have tried with a G500 that a friend of mine owns, and the neg. acceleration on my Qck heavy was quite noticeable (Counter Strike: Global offensive ingame sens 1.75, windows 6/11, 500 Dpi). He plays on higher sensitivity and it is apparently not an issue.

I'm gonna go with Artisan like several people above me.
I bought a Medium Hien 20 bucks shipped off Amazon and I like it a lot.

To put it in perspective:
QCK (cloth) is SUPER smooth but very high in drag.
Plastic mousepads have little drag but are on the rougher side.
Hien is a compromise so I can have the texture and a moderate smoothness.

I have a SS 9HD and used to use it with my g9x before I bought my new SS sensai w/ SS qck+
the 9HD is my fav hard mouse pad so far but like all hard textured mousepads they start to wear on your wrist/hand after long sessions.

the QCK+ is Huge and I love it. I do not think I will go back to hard surfaces again after using it.

yeah, valid point.

if you need more variety to choose from regarding artisan pads you could always order directly from their website in japan. as i stated before, their 3 day shipping door-to-door from tokyo to germany was really impressive, and the overall price incl. shipping was about the same as these amazon.com listings.

I ended up going back to my TL goliathus, The scarab Is too hard on my arm, I think If you are going for that pad, then you should have something to have your wrist/lower arm to rest at, as the edge is very sharp.

For me I prefer cloth pads, I've used hard pads before and find it too hard to control.  I'm also currently using a G9X and find there's no issue with cloth pads.

If you're on budget:
Goliathus Control medium size is a good quality vs money mousepad to use.

If you're in the states:
I heard Puretrak Talent is good cheaper alternative to Artisan, I mention in the states because shipping outside states cost too much and you're better off getting Artisan mousepads in that case.

If you can afford to spoil yourself a little:
Artisan mousepads are pretty much the highest quality cloth pads around.  For a more traditional feel go Hien, for fastest cloth go Hayate.  For a soft/hard hybrid go Shiden (also it's white and look very nice).

Incase you're looking more into getting a proper Artisan one... :-)

European based distributor (ships worldwide though) for Artisan:  http://www.xoam.net

As an e-Sports player I'm always looking for the best gear to give me an edge in gaming. I found Artisan as the most praised brand of mouse pads in the community, and after trying them out I could easily understand why. I however found them very hard to get a hold of in Europe (and the US, for that matter). After a few months of communication with Artisan regarding their sponsorship of my Battlefield 3 team and increasing the availability of the Artisan mouse pads, I started my own company to become a retailer for them, mainly in Europe, but shipping around the world (tax-free sales outside of the EU).

There is currently also summer sales going on, reducing all prices by 20%. Feel free to check it out on http://www.xoam.net
