hey from the uk
« on: Tue, 21 May 2013, 02:11:47 »
hi everyone, I'm Dave and I'm pleased to meet you :)

I'm generally into computing, hard and soft, and I love being creative and finding interesting solutions to problems.

I recently purchased my first mech keyboard, a Steelseries 6gv2, yes the one with the bigass enter key! In my hunt for some blank white keycaps I found you crazy modders :D I'm hoping to get a nice set from Imsto's store, and maybe begin yet another obsession that I can't afford!

Welcome Dave. I hope you enjoy your stay. I'm sure you'll be happy with Imsto's keycaps, however I don't think the entire set will be compatible with your Steelseries. He sells keycaps for US-ANSI keyboards, which is a category that the Steelseries unfortunately doesn't fall under :(

Here's an example of a keyboard with a US-ANSI layout :

thanks for the welcome Photekq :)

I did find this listing on his taobao shop:

This seems identical to my keyboard except my UK left shift is shorter and there is an extra key next to it, as seen here:

Crossing my fingers this will work for me, hopefully I can find someone who has purchased this set with this keyboard and can give me some feedback. I am new to keyboard modding, but have been reading up on the different type of materials in the manufacture of keycaps and it seems PBT is what I would prefer, but I cannot see on the Imsto shop listing what materials these white caps are made from; if anyone can help me here it would be much appreciated.

I forgot about those. I thought you were referring to Imsto's famous 'thick PBT dyesub' caps which are regarded as some of the highest quality keycaps on the market due to the PBT plastic that is used, the thickness of the caps, and the use of dye sublimation which results in legends that will practically never wear away.

The keycaps you linked linked seem to be thinner keycaps and have lasered legends as you can see in the first picture in the store. They will probably be nicer keycaps than your stock keycaps, but they won't be Imsto's famous thick PBTs. Regardless I hope you enjoy them. I'm sure you will :)

I've seen these thick caps mentioned on the forums (I've been lurking here for a little while!), and for someone new to the world of keycaps you have concisely explained why they are so popular, so thank you very much :)

I noticed the legends on the white set, and while I would prefer entirely blank, sadly this was the only set I could find with the unusual enter key. Maybe I will mix n' match with these popular thick PBT caps over time as I am intrigued with how they feel! Thanks again for your help Photekq, very kind of you :)

No problem at all. Any time. A mix and match with a thick PBT set would look pretty cool, although a set of thick PBTs costs about the same as your keyboard :P

Uh I think that keyboard layout is the 7G and I cant remember exactly, but a couple other keys are out aswell; hopefully someone wit hmy knowledge than me can help you better. Sorry.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

it will be cheaper for you to just buy a new board now if you are interested in keysets

those boards are made well but the layout is gonna be really restrictive
I'M IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING RIGHT NOW, WILL BE BACK AROUND SOON

Thanks for the info guys, I got this keyboard at a bargain price which is why I can stretch for some custom caps (stretching a little more than I should really) - typical that it uses some non-standard keycaps, but I'm feeling the draw of a challenge now! The image on the AiKB taobao page with white caps suggests it is a 6Gv2 rather than a 7G, as from my research it seems all variations of the 7G have a small backspace key, but this is still a reasoned assumption. I will PM Mr Imsto and see if he can provide any further information.
