So the other day I met up with a few local members from geekhack and managed to try a lubed vintage black keyboard with custom springs.  And man I have to say it feels so much smoother.  I was trying it side by side with HHKB and I have to say it feel really close, it's almost like a linear Topre.

While I have no soldering experience so it's probably still a long way until I mod my own switches, but I would like to research a little bit about this matter.  I think there is a lubing guide somewhere in geekhack already, now I'm just wondering about the Korean custom springs.

Are the Korean springs measured by actuation force or bottom out force?  From the website it says actuation force but I vaguely remember people say it's by bottom out force.

===========================================================================

45g - I guess this is for people who want super light switches?

55g - From what I've read this is similar to MX Brown spring.  Also does Red and Brown use the same spring?

62g - Is this what people use to mod a in-between switch between Red and Black?  Because if that's the case then this might be what I want.

65g - What's this for?  Seems very similar to 62g.

80g - I guess this is for making super Blacks?

===========================================================================

But yeah as I've mentioned, my goal is something between Red and Black.  Is 62g the answer to this?

Thanks guys !!!

62g or 65g.  62g is every so slightly stiffer than stock red springs (the stiffness is near unnoticeable).  65g is noticeably stiffer than stock red springs, but every so slightly less stiff than a stock black spring.

Damn why can't they do a 63.5g LOL

Now I feel like I have to pick between Red and Black again.  Btw anyone know if stock Red and Brown use the same spring?

Yes Red, Brown, and Blue use the same spring.

Well, if you can find it....62g gold springs are probably what you are looking for.  The gold springs feel a tad heavier/springier than their silver counterparts.

They are so similar.  I honestly cannot believe manufacturing tolerances are that tight.

80g should be basically the same as stock black springs AFAIK.
Also, I think stock red/brown/blue springs are about 60g.
IIRC Korean 62g springs were made specifically for ergo clears.

I might be wrong though.

Is such a small difference really noticeable? I find this hard to believe. I would like to see two boards, identical except for the springs. And then have people type on it and try to identify which is which.
It would be a keyboard version of The Lady Tasting Tea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_tasting_tea)
How about we call the experiment, "The Nerdy Clacking Keys"

EDIT: To do the test correctly, we'd need multiple boards of each type. Two has too high of a false positive rate. Sorry, brain fart.

I'd be interested in this too.  I've tried both side by side and the 62g is slightly stiffer, but that could be placebo effect.  65g is most definitely stiffer though.

From what I've read the 62g springs were designed to solve the sticking issue on ergo clears. I think it works.

Otherwise, I use mostly linear switches. Such small difference determines, whether I do bottom out [or actuate] the switch, or not.

YES. 62g gold are perfect. And they are just slightly heavier than regular 62g.
