Cheap keycaps for Cherry
« on: Wed, 22 October 2008, 16:44:04 »
Does anyone have an idea where I can get spare key caps that will fit over the Cherry switches? I mean, sure I could just buy a Cherry keyboard and use that but is there a cheaper way to do that? Also, do different keyboards have different shaped keycaps, and if so, how do I make sure I get the right shape? Right now I'm using a Das III (blue Cherries) and am looking to replace certain characters with white keys.

I have heard of loose switches but not keycaps.  I would get the cheapest POS (not point of sale :) ) keyboard you can find that has Cherry MX switches regardless of color (switches, that is; black, blue, brown or white), and use that.  Since keycaps are not generally produced for bulk sale, I doubt you will find a source for them.

I heard cherry keyboards with MY switches (membrane) use the same mx keycaps and they cost less than MX based keyboards so that route might be the best

Here is a page on cherry MX keycaps . The author mentions a couple of stores, though I dont know if these are UK based or US based. The keycaps look neat (multi-colored, translucent, clear, black, etc) though I didnt see white ones its possible the stores he mentioned carries other colors.

Apparently some old cherry numberpads and keyboards come with customizer keycaps (where you can pull the transparent plastic top off and put in a piece of paper labelling the key). That might be another route to customizing the look of mx keycaps. Three examples, here, here, and here, if you can find these numpads/keyboards for cheap on ebay and then harvest the transparent keycaps off them.
