hi All

Title says it. I'm looking for a Model F 122-keys! I have vowed that it will be the last keyboard I ever buy. I already have enough keyboards to last me 1000 years.

I know you can always find them buyitnow on ebay. The price tends to be exorbitant. EG current listing is asking for 185 w/o shipping, wtf. Furthermore I need to ship back to my country so everything gets $30-40 tacked on even with a proxy shipper reducing costs greatly.

I'm hoping to get one for around $100 shipped to OR where my proxy is. Obviously if any of you guys pick one up for much less at a local garage sale, you can keep the extra as a finder's fee. It's ok to be missing a few 1x1 keycaps, as long as hard to find keycaps are not lost (eg space bar, stepped keys, return key.) Legs have to be intact because they're not replaceable. Has got to be working fine, of course!

BTW I am also in the market for Model F 84-key keycaps. It's not a high priority, but if you have a smashed up Model F and want to get a few bucks from selling the keycaps, I'm game!

This comes from the time when I got a smashed up Model F in the mail and decided it was too much trouble to repair so I would dye the keycaps instead. Now I'm toying with the idea of making rainbow keycaps for my only working Model F!

The only key that is dramatically difficult is the space bar, and only because the wire is smaller. There is still a work-around, although I haven't done it.

Legs are easily replaceable (although complicated - examine the fit as you take them apart) and a few very very early M-122s had a similar case including legs.

I'm contemplating selling mine right now, based on the outcome of this thread: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46235.0

If I do, it will be near the price you're looking to pay.

um... fohat, what's easy for you is not quite... easy for me...  ;D ;D ;D

Anyway I have resigned myself to lurking on ebay for a long, long time...  ;) ;) ;)

BTW I am wondering if (based on what esoomenona is trying to do) iti is possible to mod a Model M 122 key into a Model F. The reason being of course that Model M 122 keys are cheap and easy to find, while Model F 84 keys are cheap and easy to find. If only it was a question of grabbing the capacitative hammers and swapping them in...

Model F and Model M are completely different.

I suppose that many people are confused, and imagine that they are much alike because they look similar on the outside and the keys interchange.

Anyone who has ever taken both types apart understands that the similarity stops at the surface.

It is impossible to "modify" a Model M into a Model F, and while a Model M can be cut (I am referring to the internals here) and patched up and it will still work properly, I do not think that could be done with a Model F.

Forget making a Frankenstein out of them.

The good news is that there are extra barrels, and the same components are used across the board, so changing from ANSI to ISO or activating the hidden keys is quite easy (easier on the F than M, unless it has been bolt-modded).

And about the legs, they are simply held in with springs. The F-122 legs are in about 5-6 parts with a helical spring, and the XT/AT legs are one piece of plastic and a twisted spring/clip.
