Crazy Idea - Portable replacement for laptop
« on: Mon, 19 August 2013, 05:45:25 »
Okay, Sorry if this is rambly and disorganized. It's sort of how my brain is right now.

I had this idea when checking out JDCarpe's new 40% Keyboard, the Smallfry.

It made me really want a laptop, so I could have a reason to need a portable option, but I don't really like laptops, because I feel like they're a waste of keyboard. So, I need help potentially designing a laptop replacement. I'm thinking a hybrid tablet/desktop. The motherboard and processor would be part of the monitor housing, and I know these exist on some level already, but with the intent of portability, so it could run on battery. CD/DVD drive and power buttons on one side, and the standard array of ports on the other. I'm thinking maybe a 15 inch screen, to emphasize the portability, but I don't know how far that would limit the hardware.

Here's a two minute mockup in paint to just give a very basic idea of what I'm thinking:

I'd love to take up the legwork on this piece, dremelling plastic to my heart's content to mod myself some housing, but I've never taken apart a monitor, and I could use some help with the design specifics, as this isn't my area of expertise. Anyone want to take on a hell of a project with me?

Also, is this something you'd be interested in purchasing for yourself? I'm considering trying to patent and sell the idea, if we ever get a prototype up.

I don't get it. Is this just a propped up tablet with an OTG cable and mechanical keyboard? Because that option exists already. Or you can just get a 60% keyboard and laptop and put the keyboard over the laptop keyboard? I do the second option with a Pure and my Chromebook.

Or you can get a tablet with Atom processor and W7 installed to it ;)

It's a bit more than a tablet in my head. I'm aiming for something we can game with, without losing its portability. I'm not trying to say it's the new big thing, it's definitely a niche market. People who want more than a tablet, but specifically don't want a stock laptop keyboard. I'm looking for everything a laptop currently has, CD drive, HDMI output, plus gaming potential. Things a tablet can't offer.

If you're fine putting your 60% on your laptop, that's cool. But I hate the current laptop design. I feel like there should be an option that offers slightly more permanence without sacrificing battery life. So, this is something that'll be a little harder to bring around with you (due to the shape) but offers a cleaner look, and a more niche application.

If I saw the product in my head on a shelf at a store, for the same price, and same specs as a laptop, I would buy this over the laptop immediately. So, that being said, I want to see it come to fruition. Maybe I'm the only one out there who'd buy one of these, that's cool. But I believe enough in my little design here to at least try and see it through.

This is just one example but these already exists? Now sure how your wanting to make it different?

Oh, that's definitely closer to what I'm thinking. I'm looking for something that looks a little more permanent. I'm not a fan of the ultra-thin profile, but it's definitely in the family of devices I'm shooting for.

So.. It's a gaming tablet with a CD drive and a stand?

Sorry, but I think this is a little bit silly. Why not just buy a tablet, CD drive and stand? :))

There's a few gaming tablets out there already, for example the Razer Edge.

Well, the idea isn't for it to be a tablet. I hadn't envisioned it as touch screen. I saw it more as a laptop sans keyboard.

Maybe I should clarify my intent.

Every keyboard I've owned, or gotten a chance to use (to include the Origin PC that I got my wife, which is a truly amazing machine) I have hated the keyboard and mouse for. So I find that when I use ANY laptop, I end up carrying a keyboard and mouse around with me, and the onboard I/O devices see not a damn bit of use.

So, it's a laptop that doesn't have a keyboard or mouse at all. It's intended to be a bit more stationary. A longer battery life if I can figure out how to swing that, probably a touch more heavy, and can hold it's own with the better gaming laptops in the world.

This has USB ports and Windows 7, which means you can use this with external mouse and keyboard.

Of course there are Chinese made products which do the same exact thing and don't cost as much as the one in my link ;). All you will have to add is a kickstand and you are set.

As others have said, there are a lot of options out there for slates/tablets with Windows and i5 processors with integrated Intel 4000 GPUs... I honestly think this is about the best you're going to get gaming-wise for several years to come.  In building a "gaming tablet" (anything beyond angry birds, or whatever is the "in" tablet game these days), your main challenge is going to be 1) Battery life 2) Heat 3) portability.  Several of the above mentioned tables with i5s only run 2-4 hours of reasonable use, which isn't terrible, but that will plummet for real gaming.  Also, dedicated GPUs put out a lot of heat, and with a thin tablet-esque body, we're talking heat to the point you wouldn't want to/be able to pick it up.  Even if you're talking about a kick-stand or such to hold it up, it would suck to try and put in a bag/carry when you were done with it.  You would also need a thicker body to accommodate fans and airflow, and it would end up being the thickness of a book.  Not in itself a dealbreaker, I suppose, but by the time you factor in the power adapter you'd have to carry because of the poor battery life, the thickness of the unit, and an external keyboard and mouse, I don't see this a being any more convenient or desirable than carrying a separate laptop and keyboard.  That's a really interesting idea, though.

I'm definitely looking to lean away from the Tablet side, and emulate a laptop more, and with the thick body I have envisioned, and the shape of the legs supporting it, it wont be the easiest thing to transport, no. I envision the whole thing being slightly more bulky than a laptop, and a bit more inconvenient, but as I'm biased on the project, since it's my project, I don't really care. Once I'm out of the army, I'll be starting up college courses, and I'd like something I could take to college, take notes on, and bring home and game on. It's intended for longer stay use than most laptops, not really supposed to be as portable as a netbook or tablet, but it's not supposed to fill that purpose, that niche.

So, most everybody seems to be thing "What's the ****ing point, if I can already use a laptop"

Well, I don't know. I guess there isn't a point, I just hate laptop keyboard and pointers enough to spend all this time and energy removing them from the equation entirely. I feel like there should be another portable option. So it's not a laptop, it aint a tablet, and it's not a desktop, and it's not trying to fill any of these roles specifically, but could find a spot in most of them. If you're willing to lug the thing around.

I know this is a -very- niche project, and one I might be the very singular person interested in seeing it through, but I still think it's a worthwhile project, just to have something unique.

Surface Pro?

Or are you talking about also trying to affix the keyboard to the display? I'm sure some hack might make that viable.

I mean, it's not that it's not a cool idea. It's just seems like there are options that exist already. I'd be interested in seeing what comes out of this but I think the audience or market would be very niche; exactly like you said earlier.

Not that it's exactly what the OP is looking for but I know a few years ago there were some systems made with everything in the keyboard case. I supposed a custom case for a mechanical board could be done this way.

Yeah, I wholeheartedly accept that this project is for me, and nobody else. I'm not trying to make a buck off of this idea, this is that idea that's all mine, and I'm not trying to market it.

If someone else is interested enough, I might just look into making another, but I don't foresee that being worth the effort really.

I really like the idea. Could have gaming laptop or better hardware but no keyboard. Consumer tablets are too focused on being thin and light over powerful. Point me to a 15in+ tablet with an i7 and high end (for a laptop anyway) nvidia card and I'll concede that's a currently existing viable option.
