Which switch?
« on: Thu, 05 September 2013, 21:47:20 »
Hi guys I'm still trying to decide if I should buy a Shine 3 with reds or browns. I'm on reds right now and I don't know how browns feel. I've read that browns feel scratchy and that you wouldn't feel it when typing quickly. Is this true?

Would you like your reds to have a grain of sand stuck in the switch? Then buy browns. Otherwise, stick with reds. I have browns, and I can definitely feel the little bump when typing. Except it feels more like the switch is just scratchy than it feels like a bump.

I would go with browns.

I can never seem to type right on reds.

No-one can tell you whether you'd like browns or not, just as no-one could have predicted whether you'd like reds or not.

If you can, borrow or use someone else's keyboard with browns, or see if you can find a retail outlet near you where you can try such a keyboard.

Otherwise buy one with browns to see what you think - you might like them or not.

If not, you can always (post a bit more to reach 60 posts and) sell it here in classifieds for nearly what you paid for it.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I have a bestbuy near me that might have a Blackwidow stealth but I don't have time to go this week. I've played planetside 2 on mx blues and wasn't that bad except that I wasn't able to spam the keys, I was considering browns after that. When I type on reds I bottom out to be sure I pressed the key, I've gotten tired of that so I might just pull the trigger on buying brown on a shine 3 when they are back in stock on mechanical keyboards.com.

I've tried Browns on a Zowie board and it didn't feel scratchy at all. They actually felt really good for typing.

I'd go with reds personally, I just love the feel of reds, they're just a dream to type on for me, I've got blacks too and I despise them, so don't go for reds.

Reds or browns though? that's a tough one, I still say reds though.

I used to prefer Blues and Buckling Springs, but I now like Browns for everyone else's sake.

I really liked blues when I used it during an all nighter... It was decent at playing games wasn't that bad but it's too loud, I really hope Ducky will release the shine 3 with cherry clears. Hm I might just buy browns.

I've been typing on reds for a while, and I enjoy them. If you enjoy your reds you might be let down on the browns. I tried them on the UST, and I really didn't like how the tactility was hardly noticeable. I preferred the feel of the clears and their combinations. I've been reading that clears are now hard to come by.

If you really like your reds and can type comfortably on them, then get reds...but if you are really curious or just want to add more to your collection, then get browns or blues. Or ditch the Shine 3 and go Topre with me XD.

Really? hmmm Then I might get reds again. I just have a lot of typos on my reds and was thinking that if I were to buy browns I might have less. You say it's barely noticeable how large is the difference? Some say like a grain of rice and some say a grain of sand.

More like sand in my opinion. Well, my reference for rice is uncooked medium grain white rice and that is pretty big if you think about it.

I think I'll try browns I seem to make a lot of mistakes on my reds right now. I tried with a palm rest and I make less I can only imagine with browns I've really red about all of this and I really think I might like it. I bottom out to ensure I clicked it. I bought this board sorta without really knowing much about mechanical keyboards.... I really like it but I typed on blues and loved it minus the noise which is a bit too loud, if I end up not liking it where can I sell it over here on geekhack?

I don't know how people avoid bottoming out on browns. It has the same force as the mx reds, but just has that tiny bump. I tried out a board at Microcenter and totally bottmed out all the time.

To bottom out or not bottom out has more to do with your technique than with the board itself.

If you can just try them out since you live in the US.
Then you can decide which switch to get, no one else can tell you what you will like, you need to find out yourself.
GL with your new keyboard!
Ducky Shine 2 with Blues
Poker 2 with Reds
KMAC Korean Custom with Clears

I called bestbuy they said they don't have any keyboards that are on display or anyone I can open and try.. Well I think I'll just pull the trigger on this one and get browns on a shine 3 when it's in stock again.
