Reccomend me a Laptop
« on: Mon, 09 September 2013, 16:33:27 »
Hey guys, my last "Recommend me" thread went quite well so i'm posting another.

I now need a laptop, it doesn't need to be too rugged as it wont get moved to far, but it will be in my bag daily. I wont really be playing games on it but I suppose if I could play some basic games on low graphics that would be a bonus. Windows 7 (not 8, I have heard some laptops have downgrading issues? Any thoughts on this?) Mucho Word processing. Large (1tb+) hdd. Speedy.

So yeah, not bought/owned a laptop in a long time, any advice as too what I should look for. My work is forwarding me a bit of money and my budget sort of maxes out at just under $800, thoughts.

Cheers all!

The best laptop I have ever owned is my current 11-inch Macbook Air (MBA). If you prefer Win7 or Win8 to OSX, you can run Windows very well using Bootcamp. The MBA is very thin and light, yet rugged, and consequently very portable. I went with the 11-inch because I wanted to make it easy to take the laptop with me. My primary computer is a desktop, and when I travel, I don't want a desktop replacement, I want something that is easy to pack and carry. Although the MBA is small, it is quite fast and powerful enough to run all the applications I care about.

Generalizations can be dangerous. Figure out what you want the laptop to do for you, write out the specs, then shop for the one that best fits what you are looking for.

If you like the macbook air, check out the thinkpad X1 carbon. It's what I have and it's superior for work than the macbook air, and of course thinkpad tough. The Helix is also an interesting product. The only issue I see with the thinkpad or macbook air is the largest harddrive you can get are 256GB and they aren't replaceable, both are custom for the machine.

Thinkpad are about to release the T440 t440s etc, so if you are interested in a T series I would wait.

YOU SHOULD JUST USE WINDOWS 98. THEN THEY WOULDN'T BE DANGEROUS.

For carrying in a bag I cannot recommend anything larger than 14",  like my HP DM4T, it has a second generation i7 (2 processors) running at 2.7Ghz (up to 3.4).
You can get something lighter and skinnier, but all of them skinny ones are like 1.6Ghz.
Also, I would get the extra size battery and a 512GB SSD (cost me $300 back in the days).
It's powerful enough that I run my everyday tasks (connected to a 24" monitor and external keyboard and mouse of course) but I also have my desktop for playing BF3 (and soon BF4!).
I also got a iPearl case for it and can got some DVD drive(s) (can't remember the name) that convert the DVD drive into a HD drive for dual booting and adding another HD.
Nice review here (but the review is for an i5 version): http://www.laptopreviews.com/hp-pavilion-dm4t-2012-review-2012-02

Excellent advice. In my own case, most of my computing gets done with desktop computers in my home and work offices, but when I am on the road or packing a laptop for taking notes or pulling up documents at meetings, I want something that is truly portable. Some time ago, I had a 15-inch Dell laptop, but it was too unwieldy to carry along, so it was seldom used. Next, I got a 13-inch Macbook, and it, too, was a bit too bulky and heavy, and so it got left behind. Currently, I have an 11-inch Macbook Air, and I seem to have found the sweet spot for portability and sufficient power to do real work on the go. It has a 512 GM flash drive and it is sufficiently fast and capacious to be useful, yet it is small and light enough to be eminently portable. So, whether you go for a Mac or PC laptop, I would advocate going for portability unless you want your laptop to be a complete desktop replacement as well.

I think with your budget, a Thinkpad X230 would be a nice choice for you. Although you may have to upgrade the disk drive to meet your requirements.
They get amazing battery life, run Windows 7, have pretty good specs, and are portable yet tough.

(Disclaimer: I'm biased because I own a similar product.
